dazzanz: Does anyone have a suggestion for how to do this without WiFi in the garage? Alternatively a cheap way to bridge WiFi over a long distance? Ethernet over power line won’t work either as it’s on its own meter. Our house is on a hill and garage is on the street so I’m constantly worrying about it being open.

Do you have a clear line of sight from house to garage? Or trees and things in the way.

Before I installed WiFi in my garage I was going to try using modified a 415 Mhz door opener.

Basically, when the door is open, triggering periodic transmission of a 415 door beeper and using the opener to blink a light or somesuch.

I would have had to mount the 'beeper' part on my garage roof otherwise the transmissions would not have enough range.

Do you have a clear line of sight from house to garage? Or trees and things in the way.

There would be a line of sight but I couldn't mount anything large on the garage as the area which would have line of sight is next to the stairs that lead up to the house.

In regards to the original posters question, when I had WiFi in a garage I used this https://www.dicksmith.co.nz/dn/buy/kogan-smarterhome-wireless-garage-door-opener/ it connected to the garage door opener so you can open and close via an app and includes a sensor which reports if the door is open or not.

Does the arrowhead app not give you the ability to monitor zones open and closed status?

surely you just a add a reed switch and assign it as non bypass zone. This way you wont be able to arm the system unless the door is shut.

I have a more complex system on mine:

2 Reed switches on each door, 1 for fully open and one for fully shut.

If door is "open" the system will not arm

If the door is in-between, zone is bypassed until closed

if closed it will arm

This means I can arm the house as I drive away and not wait for the door to shut... there is actually some more logic at play, but that is the basics

I use the Arrowhead app - EliteControl, to both open/close the Garage door and to monitor open/closed status via a reedswitch. The app display sensor status showing if the soor i sopen or closed

I have the Aeotec Garage Door Controller -> Hubitat -> HomeBridge -> Apple eco system.

It's literally magic! I can ask Siri to open/close door. My apple watch / phone tells me the current state and complete control of the garage door.

I tell siri about 50m from my garage to open the door and she always obeys! Absolutely brilliant!!!

Google YoLink. LoRaWAN based so it'll run forever off batteries, and you can check the status on your phone. We use it to check that the frequently-left-open bathroom window is closed when we leave, among a pile of other stuff, e.g. something in the letterbox, water leak alarms, etc.

Edited to add: To give some more info, it has a base station that you connect to your router and that then it communicates with all the devices via LoRaWAN. We've got sensors at various places on the property, e.g. to check for possums in the traps, check whether the letterbox has been opened, etc, and they all communicate fine and run for one or more years off a single set of AA batteries.

Went down to my garage today to find it open, not sure if I accidentally hit the open button while walking or if it was open overnight... Considering its full of stuff I didn't notice anything missing so hopefully the former. Definitely need to find a solution, one link shared here had a mikrotik link to get wifi down there. I can't seem to find it available anywhere though.
