I ended up ordering them before I realized they weren't what I thought they were, and they shipped them within 2 hours of my order so too late to cancel. I guess I'll have a go at getting Home Assistant running on my Synology otherwise there might be some for sale on TM.

@networkn - keep me in mind if you find they are not quit write and home assistant is not the path for you, before listing on TM.

I have been playing with Home Assistant on a Pi for a couple of months, and ordered 4 of the ESPHome plugs - they arrived yesterday and were *so easy* to set up. I'll likely get some more.

I wasn't sure whether to get the ESPHome ones or the Tasmota ones - for my HA purposes both work well; is there a compelling reason to use one over the other, or to convert the ESPHome ones to Tasmota?

Related quick question please - I bought one of these so I could power cycle our Cable Modem without having to go up to the data cabinet in the attic. (Long story, multiple discussions with Vodafone, etc.) Got worried when I realized they have a cloud component, but I get the impression for the (somewhat patchy) docs that I can still control the socket over our LAN. Does that sound right?

Interesting question for sure. Certainly hoping others with more experience can answer this.

I had two turn up yesterday.  Considering I’d flashedr some of the bunnings brilliant ones to tasmota, these slotted right in.  They’re a good size as well. 

Did anybody that bought these plugs by chance also buy any light bulbs? How are they working for you?

After some more reading, you'll want something with an ESP32 or ESP82xx chipset. Didn't see any chipset specs listed.

Bulky stuff. I use smaller ones. Don‘t know if they are available for NZ wall sockets. For US yes.

I sent a query to https://www.techbrands.co.nz/ (JayCar distributors - turns out it is a brand-name for https://www.electusdistribution.co.nz/ ) who sent it to JayCar Australia, who asked their (JayCar?) project manager, who said "The supplier isn't willing to confirm but from experience they are usually an ESP32 / Espressif module."

Tuya-Convert might not be possible for this device since the template was added (2020-03-12).

I bought this thing (apart for general IoT interest) to enable me to power-cycle our cable modem without having to go up to the attic. (We get an outage every week or two. Vodafone won't do anything much to try to fix the problem. So far the cheap price for gig Internet over fibre makes it worth putting up with.) I'd prefer to have a script that reboots if it can't ping an Internet address ... not sure I'll get there!

Which it will do...but you might be limited to using the tuya app (or getting tuya-local going in home assistant, or tuya2mqtt going).  For one device, probably not worth it.
