Roku has had 4K AV1 for a while. Google only just released HD AV1. Some say chip shortage. I'd prefer a Google 4K AV1 over Roku or Amazon. On the other hand I'm not going to wait much longer for Google. Amazon have some great deals right now and it is the latest..

PBTech have a launch deal on the base model to NZD $67

No sign of deals for the Max yet.

Has anyone managed to  get ThreeNow or TVNZ+ on an older 4k Firestick?

ThreeNow appears to install, but TVNZ+ is blocked on my device.

UPDATE

Just checked and TVNZ have restricted their APP to the official NZ devices

You can try sideloading the TVNZ+ APK from Matt Huisman's website. For some reason I can't post the URL here.

I have a Gen 1 fire TV (not the stick) - I have lots of other apps on it, but the TVNZ app shows with a red X against it for my device.

Likewise ThreeNow.

But then its a very old device now - I actually see that if I was in the USA I could return it and get a credit!

Purchased one today after the issues I have been having with 4K Chromecast with Google Tv. I have to say - I’m impressed and looks like my issues with sound is not happening on this Fire Stick.
Also finding this faster!

I use Google TV on two of our TVs and want to upgrade the kids to their own Google TV units, but I'm curious as to which is better now that we have the 4K Max here. Keen for opinions from this group. Also, have the TVNZ app issues been sorted/will they get sorted? Does it have casting ability, although that isn't that important. The Warehouse currently have the 4K Max for $109 and PB has them for $107. The Warehouse matches and beats lower prices by 10%, so I'm interested in if it's worth the change.

So it's definitely a step up in your opinion? What sound issues were you having?

Spent most of this evening using the Fire Stick 4K Max - Its definately faster and performant than the Chromecast with Google TV. Watching videos with to CcwGtv is fine. No issues but browsing the interface is slow and annoying. I dont experience this with the Fire Stick. Another thing I really like about the Fire Stick - its Wifi6 so it nicely connects to my AP's.

From an app perspective - they are effectively the same. e.g Netflix is the same on either of same but again - I can browse things a lot quicker with the Fire Stick.

Fire Stick naturally includes Prime intergration - which is fine since I subscribe to Prime anyways.

Overall a decent device. I think its better than the CcwGtv which I have had since they were released overseas so a couple of years now.

Faster sounds good; the CcwGtv is often a bit 'sticky' when browsing. Sound like I might be giving the kids the CcwGtv units and getting the Max units for us then. Does the TVNZ app work? I can't miss The Chase!

I'm wondering whether it might be time to ditch the HTPC in favour of a Fire TV? Specifically, does the Fire TV have a enough flexibility?  Eg I'd like to watch youtube using a browser such as Brave, and use my wireless keyboard/mouse (Logitech K400+).  A quick google suggests that this may be possible if I sideload Brave and buy an 'OTG cable' for the keyboard dongle.  Would this work smoothly, or should I just stick with the HTPC?

Setup the new fire TV stick today to replace Android TV built into a jbl sound bar.

It runs much faster and no lag decoding video that plagued the jbl. Works absolutely fine with tvnz+ which came straight from the App Store, no apk sideloading required . Also running skysportnow, three now, prime video, YouTube, Netflix with no issues.

This is great intel, thank you. Think I’m ready to take the plunge.

In a simpler form , could someone explain to me in very basic terms how you load the apps onto your TV Stick as I’ll be trying to explain this to my elderly father ( 83 ) 😆
