Technofreak: What effect does the 103 V 87 FOV have on usable distance especially at night?

Not a great deal at night. You are limited by the quality of illumination and what LOD you are trying to achieve.

I just ordered two of these to go with my new NAS after quickly reading this thread. Hope I made the right call!

One thing you may want to check is how the DS220j deals with high res 4k video from cameras. I found performance really improved with Surveillance Station on my DS220+ after I added extra RAM, and that’s with only 5MB cameras. I don’t think the j version is upgradable though?

Thanks for the message! I just cancelled the DS220J and will find the cheapest DS220+ today. Seems to be here https://www.mwave.com.au/product/synology-diskstation-ds220-2bay-diskless-nas-celeron-dual-core-20ghz-2gb-ac35805

@BLazeD - I think that’s a good call to make; the + is definitely a much more future-proofed machine compared to the j, especially if you ever intend to use it as a media server via Plex or similar (I use ours for this purpose as well as general storage and security cameras, and it works brilliantly - RAM upgrade, as mentioned, is totally worth it.)

As it happens, Mauricio (owner of GZ) has a 220+ for sale at the moment - $420 incl shipping (w/o drives) could save you a bit over buying new. Check out https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=77&topicid=302442

Edit: Just to note, if you do intend to use Synology’s own security camera software (Surveillance Station), it comes with two licences; if you ever intend to buy additional cameras just keep in mind you’ll need to purchase new licences. I’ve found there are a couple of European sites that offer the cheapest legit licences. It seems to be popular to shit on Surveillance Station, but personally I find it generally pretty decent.

Just an update on these Reolink RLC-811A cameras: both have arrived but I’ve only had the chance to install one (lesson learnt: junction boxes do make installation much easier!) but I have hit a real frustration of what appears to be an issue with this model and Synology Surveillance Station.

If the camera is set to use H.264 I’m unable to select the 4K stream. If H.265 is selected I can select the 4K stream, but the web interface for Surveillance Station doesn’t support it; more frustratingly, it doesn’t look like it’s possible to also run a second low-res stream for ‘fluent’ viewing. Waiting for direction from Reolink, but I imagine they’ll tell me it’s a Synology problem and to contact them.

Did you have any luck getting these setup?

Finally got around to start installing my RLC-410a's and now thinking about swapping 1 out for a rlc-811a for the driveway instead for the spotlight/4k, so would be interested in feedback.

Yep, set up and running; the spotlights are effective when they're on, but I have to say they don't get triggered that often as most of our night-time recordings are currently of insects or rain! (They only turn on automatically if the motion is detected as a 'person' 'vehicle' or 'pet'; otherwise they can be set to remain on.)

The resolution is distinctly superior to the lower-res Reolinks I already had, though as mentioned in an earlier post the 4K stream causes problems with Synology's recording software (I already had the licences for additional cameras so am not looking to change software). I am also finding them somewhat fiddly to get exactly right in terms of detection settings, but hopefully it'll be sorted ok before we leave on holiday.

Anyway, as per my DM, happy if you want to check them out in-person, if that helps your decision. Are there particular reasons you're thinking of the upgrade?

Good feedback thank you! I just ordered 5 810a and will be incorporating them into home assistant. The home assistant integration allows for sub streaming, then on blowing them up goes onto 2k streaming (still only h.264 though).
