I am also looking at hard wired options as a ESP in a battery nit will severely drain the battery, even in sleep mode.

Running a esp8266 on a 9v battery has its challenges, but I haven't ruled it out yet because other people seem to have pulled it off.  A bare bones esp-12 module and low quiescent current regulator draw around 20uA in deep sleep.  An esp32s might also be worth looking into.  But before I go down that route, I was hoping to find out more about the Aliexpress Tuya alarms.  (Also, the Cavius option mentioned by dasimpsonsrule sounds interesting)

+1 for this, I have some dumb ones that just are sirens, but i would want some smart ones for home assistant so can get notified if not home.

want fully local control, no cloud rubbish.  think that rules out any tuya devices.

I think you should hook it up to the alarm to get quality ones that will be powered by the panel with battery backup. DSC panel with EVL4 module? https://www.eyezon.com/evl4.php

The nest ones also expensive but probably worth it, not everything needs to intergrate into HA :(. If your dead you cant automate!

Appreciate it's not HA, but Apple Homekit with a Homepod can now listen for a smoke alarm sounding and report to you. Use whatever alarms you like and it just listens for them.
