Damn - yeah, I don't see anything that looks like DIN rails on my main board. It looks like the typical plastic jobs put in most kiwi residential houses - so unless there are DIN rails behind it, I'm guessing I'm out of luck?  I think this board was installed about 10-15 years ago when the last renovation was done (this is an older villa that's been reno'd in the 2010's).

 

Would just one of these things work if there is room inside the existing IP-rated socket  - or do you need additional hardware like a contactor?

I would assume that a main board from then would have din rails backing for the rcds/circuit breakers as I thought that was pretty standard for a long time.

 

As for having the shelly device outside, there not all that moisture proof.

 

 

 

Where does the cable run for it currently? is there room for a junction box where you could add in the shelly fully out of the weather

There is DIN rail in most boards. The MCCBs clip onto the rail.

I tried a few things for our spa. I THINK our heater is 1500W plus the pump. It’s old and kinda basic  

 

 

 

sonoff - rated at 16a - basically melted.

 

Shelly 1PM (or maybe sonoff?) with a 30A solid state relay. worked but SSRs get stupidly hot and I had no safe way to dump the heat

 

 

 

ended up buying a mechanical 30A relay from IDEAL. Power for the pump/heater goes in one side and the Shelly turns the power on/off on the other side. So the Shelly is doing milliamps and the “other side” is taking ALL of the load, as it’s designed to. Outside of checking it every 6 months cos I don’t trust my electrical skills …. I’ve not touched it in 3-4 years since I built it  

 

(yes 30A is overkill, but… might as well aim for 50% of rated capacity than 95%)

 

the Shelly 1PM also has the temperature probe attachment, so I have a DS18 temp thing feeding back to home assistant, which can turn it off when it hits temp, or in summer if the pump has been on for X hours to circulate and filter the water

 

this replaced the external box which was a clock timer. Normally the internal temp sensor would turn the heater off but when we got the motor fixed it came back not working … it was also very hit and miss - just a dial not a temp number. 

 

cost all up would be around $150 or so. Most of that is the polycarbonate IP66 box to put it all in

And for those with Bestway/Lay-z-Spas, there's an awesome ESP8266 project that gives you full wifi visibility of temperature/ability to turn on and off heater/pump/bubbles etc. Mine's seamlessly integrated into Home Assistant which is what I use to schedule off-hour heating, and the Wemos D1 mini and jumper cables required cost less than $20.
