We have the Roborock S7 and it’s a great. A non techie friend recently purchased the S8 Pro Ultra and absolutely loves it.

I recommend you checkout robomate.co.nz as they have great review videos and a store in Auckland if you want to go in and see them.

Thanks, this was a good reminder to go back and check their website; I’d visited the store when we were up in Akld in September - annoying, they didn’t have the model I was most interested in, but it’s come in now. They have a couple of good deals this Black Friday sale period, in case others are looking for a full mopping machine with base -

Dreame L10S - down from $2999 to $1999

Roborock Q Revo - this is the one I’d been wanting to check out; $1999 down to $1599

I’ve also found that PB Tech has listed the Q Revo this week, and have it at the same $1599 (+ CC surcharge!).

While I really do like the look of the new Roomba J9+, when I contacted the importers they said that while it should be in stock Q1 2024, they don’t know when or at what cost; my bet is it’ll list over $3k, so guess a good sale price will be $2.5k or more.

As such, may look to go with the Q Revo, which seems to offer good value at $1.6k.

BlargHonk:

I have an Ecovacs N8 and the hardware is good but the app is terrible. Constantly loses itself on the saved maps and has to create a new one from scratch by mapping the whole house again. Do not recommend for the sole reason of the software. Plus it has no child lock so our toddler keeps resetting it

I have a Deebot T9+ - it was working great for a yr or so.

I found that when it lost the map...I would just reboot the base and the unit - then place it in the smallest room in the house (kitchen for me) --- hit go and it would recognize the room and then restore the map.

But then it started to get lost when cleaning..time after time. I let it sit unused for months. I finally sat down and tried to figure out the issue. Googled around and some answers pointed me toward the lidar. No webs or anything obvious but the inside of the housing looked a bit dusty...cleaned the inside of the housing for the lidar and it's back to like new. Up till cleaning that----I was getting pretty frustrated with it and was getting pretty close to just trashing the unit...

Vid helped me out -

We ended up going with the Roborock Q Revo, which came second in Vacuum War's 2023 recommendations (only available here in the last week or so). Got it while it's down to $1600 at PB Tech; interestingly the usual standard price ($2000) and current Black Friday discount price is the same as in Aus, so it's one of the rare products that's cheaper here (after conversion).

It's a tall beast, thanks to the water storage containers, so we've had to shift it into a different room as we can no longer hide it under a small table. Much quicker mapping than our previous Roidmi machine, which needed to do a whole cleaning cycle to generate a map (and would later get corrupted, requiring a complete re-do!) - this one was done in 10 minutes. The app seems WAY more stable than the Roidmi's (which uses the Mi app). Also much quieter. The most frustrating thing thus far is it seems to get caught more on the edges of rugs - ironically, the Roidmi wasn't as bad as this and our first one (a Roborock S50 from 2019) was way better again.

We've not used the mopping function yet, but I am looking at what cleaning solution - if any - I should use with it. Seems to be a mixed set of comments as to whether it's worth buying the products designed for robot vacs, given the cost and the level of dilution. (It's clear most don't recommend using standard floor cleaner!) It seems like the product is more about deodorising and disinfecting the water as opposed to cleaning, which helps avoid it going smelly etc.

For those who have mopping cleaners - what product do you use? Official Roborock product isn't easily available here, and is a rip-off from when it is ($57 for 480ml from DS!). So far main options seem to be a Tineco product (that's apparently safe with robot cleaners) for $30 for 1l, or Ecovacs $37 for 1l.

I ended up jumping on the same deal from PBTech - pretty impressed so far! A massive upgrade from my original Xiaomi Roborock S? purchased from AliExpress about 6yrs ago!!

I am interested to know about cleaning solution options as well - so far I have just been using clean water.

I ended up going with the Tineco that I linked to in that earlier post; it’s designed for manually operated floor cleaners, but I imagine they will have similar internal components that could otherwise be damaged by conventional cleaning products. We’ve only cleaned with it (ie, done no runs with just water) so couldn’t comment on whether it means the machine does a better job, but we’re pretty happy with the results - certainly great no longer having what seems like a perpetually sticky floor thanks to messy teenagers! Smells nice too…

Godfrey’s also sold the Ecovacs liquid - $45 a bottle vs $37 from Harvey Norman. My local HN didn’t have it in stock, and said only two stores did - that said, it may have free click and collect.

We have the Roomba with mopping and self-emptying functions.  We're happy with its performance mopping.  We have darkish tiles and dark brown engineered wood flooring.  Those surfaces are forgiving for mopping vs lighter coloured surfaces.
