So there’s a good case for fake/decoy cameras? (Serious question).

absolutely. make sure it can be easily seen especially at night. also pays to have it in view of a camera. not uncommon for thieves to smash the (fake) camera. that means they are in a certain position which makes it easier to get good footage of them.

Is the footage from a camera actually of any use, or is it just to make the mongrel aware that they are being filmed? A hoodie and/or face mask etc is probably going to make identification difficult at a later date.

that is one of the big problems. often all you get is footage of how they did it, not who did it. putting cameras in the right place to get good footage is critical.

Our body corporate did this in our shared car park after several break ins, but only as a temporary measure because we figured that eventually the crooks would figure out that the cameras were fake. We eventually replaced it with a commercial CCTV system and haven't had any problems since.

I don't view doorbell cameras as security, they're a convenience with some peripheral security benefits.  But you're not installing doorbell cameras under the eaves of your house to watch the street or driveway or fenceline etc etc.  You're installing them as doorbells with a camera inside them so you can see who's at the door or who took your package.

I'm referring to visible, obvious looking cameras around the property.  I agree doorbell cameras are not a deterrent, because that's not their purpose.

With the Eufy system, the doorbell cam works like one of the standalone security cameras, and it also saves the footage back to the central storage hub. Infact I got better video off it than with the regular cameras, as it is below eye level. But it is almost a hidden camera as you don't know it is a camera until you are close to the front door. The security camera sticker below it however may help

That is the problem with overhead cameras I have found.

I understand that. That's not what I was responding to. It's not a physical deterrent because it's not obvious that it's a camera. It's a doorbell with a lens, so until you're standing in front of it you won't know it's got a camera.

I'm talking about obvious looking security camera shaped cameras, mounted around the house, visible from the street, not a button on a door frame.

Ourselves and a number of neighbours have all been burgled in the last month............

What was the general MO used by these burglars?

Cameras, door switches and a loud siren all help.

Improving physical security helps, and may slow down access.

another scary thought , most professional burglars know that you will have insurance and replace most things and they will come back and rob you again in 4 weeks or so. So make sure you make improvements on your security.

Nothing like urban myths to scare people.

Most “professional” burglars are basically idiots. They steal because they can or they need money. They don’t keep a calendar that they need to go back and rob you again.

If it was easy the first time some of them will come back and see if they can go again but its far from “most.”

We have had Reolink cameras with a Synology NAS previously
Have recently replaced them all with Wyze v3 or v4 for the excellent night vision. Powered with a POE adaptor and we pay $30 per year per camera ($90 for unlimited cameras) for continuous recording to the cloud.

Quick and easy to see what has happened during the day, also gives excellent notifications if that’s what you want.

We also have a driveway alarm by the gate, not actually connected inside the house but every time someone walks past the gate it flashes red at them.

We use Eufy. Easy to install and never needs to be charged as it comes with a solar panel built in.

In the front of the house we have 2 visible cameras, very obvious to see for that particular reason. I'm also installing two more around the back that look less like camers to avoid making our place look like a maximum security jail, lol.

These less obvious cameras are also solar powered and are like wall lights.

Still many households don't even have a single camera which is just asking for trouble these days.

A motion activated sprinkler.

Camera's with automatic speaker announcements also work great. I use a Dahua TiOC camera back to my NVR and all that is on a UPS.

Another idea is just a whole lot of motion sensors making noises when someone walks past them. E.g. a chime, a balloon popping, any noises to scare them a little (an aggressive a recording of someone yelling out "ah F*k" would be amazing lol🤣).

Any recommendations on external motion sensors that make a chime?

Ideally also sends a notification to a mobile too.
