I have a homepod mini and tried to plug it into a lower powered USB charger than it wanted. It wouldn't even boot. I'm not sure if that's because it didn't support the correct voltage or wattage, but either way it would be a pain to discover that after buying a couple of cheaper USB chargers.

Homepods have no internal battery.

It's on the bottom of the device - 9v 2.2A, which matches the 20w adapter it's supplied with.

Having said that, the power draw is 1.28W for music playback when powered at 230v, which is clearly not that high, but the 9v requirement means ruling out pretty much anything that wouldn't be considered high powered.

Ahh, so it's charger as power supply.

How about something like this, has a power supply lead so won't be hanging from the socket

Good idea. That would be an improvement over a wall wart.

Or this. https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/TAABEL5909198/Belkin-3-Port-67W-USB-C-Wall-Charger---include-1x

2 x downward facing 20 W PD outlets so might be a bit tidier.

johno1234:

Hi - thinking about adding a pair of Homepod mini speakers for the Apple TV and not keen on having two USB wall warts sticking out like the proverbial dog's bollocks on the wall. Looking around for a replacement power point with two fast charge 20W USB-C outputs... can't find one.

Anyone know of such a thing?

I tried to connect my homepod mini to a non apple USB c device and it would not work, it had a purple light if I recall.

Looking up Apple it said it was a non apple charger and to replace.

Put the apple one back in and it burst back in to life.

This is exactly the sort of nonsense Apple is getting into strife with the eu over.

But I’ve also heard in similar cases that the adapter was not powerful enough and that a more powerful non Apple adapter did work.

I've looked into this and ended up with a Belkin multi charger, which works well, was significantly cheaper, and is much easier to upgrade in the future. In wall high powered chargers are rare, and if you find them they are expensive.

What nonsense? The USB C PD 3.0/3.1 spec supports 5V, 9V, 15V, 20V, 28V, 36V and 48V

9V 2.2A is well within the profile 2 spec.

If the charger doesn't have the right profiles that is generally the issue.
