Back in the day the contacts in multi-boxes used to be a pair of nice brass strips pointing inwards and then veering out at the tips. Sort-of like the HPM earth  socket below but about 2-3 times as thick.

These caused no problems.

Enshittification resulted in boxes where the power contact is a single thin strip of something with a slot cut in it, positioned at 45 degrees across the slot. The power plug pin goes into this slot forcing the edges outwards and bending the metal so it's a loose fit after a couple of attempts. Hard to get the plug in, often hard to get the plug out. So much arcing and sparking trying to insert.

I bought three cheap 4-port multi-boxes a year ago: a Jackson, a Bunnings or Mitre 10 own brand Number 8 and HPM. I popped them open to look at the contacts. The Jackson and the number 8 were identical, inside and out, except for the cardboard hanger and a little square insert in the plastic moulding where one said Jackson and the other was blank.

The Jackson sockets looked OK to me, the bendy brass bits are splayed at the entry and seem to take insertions OK and release OK (but firm) There's about 3mm vertical clearance between earth and live, and a plastic fence on the bottom half of the case.

HPM has nice earth sockets but I don't like the other two so much. They're mounted in the bottom half. Need an extra push halfway down to insert.

Mind you, plug pins used to be solid brass then too, now they're folded from paper-thin sheets or look like tin-plated muck-metal. That doesn't help.

PS I'd steer clear of anything with a built-in USB charger.

PPS edited as I found the 3rd multi-box, it's HPM.
