Looking at buying Google Home for a vision impaired family member but have a few specific questions before purchase and have no desire to skim through 24 pages going back 2 years.

  1. Does the Phone Call option work in NZ?

  2. Is it able to play local audio files?. I want G.H to play my dads mp3 bible on command without sub'ing to Google Music.

  3. If #2 is no has anyone tried using G.H to play mp3 files from there Google Drive?(quick Google search indicates it can be done).

  4. G.H now has "YouVersion" bible service added. Can someone confirm it's working in NZ.

  5. Radio stations play ok? ie. audio command to play Radio Live, Radio Sport, ZB etc...

Google home not released here yet.
Recommend Amazon echo instead for now.

DSE, Mighty Ape & Trade Me have them. Just hoping someone who has purchased 1 has managed to activate/use the features I listed.

1. No "Sorry, I can't make calls yet".

2. No "Sorry, I can't help with that right now".

3. Yes tried but not possible from what I've experienced.

4. You Version worked quite well when I tried it (although I just asked it "Play the bible" and I can't tell if what it read was part of it, however).

5. Yes, they work great. News Talk ZB played via iHeartRadio, George FM played via TuneIn, and both of those streaming services are free and support nearly all NZ radio stations.

Hope that helps!

Cheers, exactly what I wanted to know. Looks like I'll have to hold off purchasing for now until more services dad can use are available.

2 more Qs if you don't mind.

- If you ask for the news headlines is G.H responding with international (cnn, BBC) or local(stuff, nzherald etc...)?

- Can G.H read specific bible verse ie. If you ask it to read John 3:16

Thanks.

No worries! :-)

1. When asked for news headlines it plays a podcast by NYT, and I listened for 5 minutes without hearing any news. When asked for some local or New Zealand headlines, it said "Sorry, I can't play news about New Zealand yet" which is pretty damn dumb.

2. I couldn't get it to jump straight to that verse from nowhere, I first had to ask it to read the bible so it would open up You Version. Then once that opened it'd start a reading plan automatically, but I could then ask it "Read John 3:16" and it replied, "For god so loves the world, that he gave his 1 and only son, that whoever believes in his would not perish but would have eternal life."

hey Google read John 3:16

It looks like you don't have the book in your Google play library. You might be able to get it from the Google store.

Thanks everyone for your help. Was really hoping G.H might help dad out. I'll pop into N.L and test drive Echo/Alexa.

Probably doesn't help much but Echo will play your own music (and I presume the Bible). I use https://www.mymediaalexa.com/

Its $5 per year.

There's also this https://www.amazon.com/Life-Church-Bible/dp/B017RXFNKY

and this https://www.amazon.com/Life-Church-Verse-of-the-Day/dp/B01NB1U6UI

and probably others which I haven't tried.

I've used both the Alexa (echo) and the Google Home (mini).

The Alexa is vastly more configurable, but it does come at a bit of a cost. The complexity is higher, and you have to adjust the phrases you use. For example, I found I need to be quite specific about naming the "skill" that was being used.

The Alexa isn't really built to be operated outside of North America. You can't say "what's the weather", rather you need to say "what's the weather in Wellington, New Zealand".

The Google Home although not customised for NZ, does indeed support being here. The simple weather example works fine.

I've settled on using the Google Home as it's simpler and seems a little more reliable.

My google home mini should arrive tomorrow !
A few bits of news I’ve picked up on Android authority
NZ support by end 2018
Now supports 3 queries at a time -x and y and z
Now supports continued conversations - no need to say ok google if speak within 8 seconds of last reply

Build your own actions looks simple enough
https://www.androidauthority.com/how-to-build-google-assistant-actions-877154/
Has anyone else done anything similar?
