insane:

Can someone please explain briefly (don't spend too much time) why you might want to have one of these?

You can look outside and see it's raining, sunny, windy, snowing etc, and weather reports make some attempt of predicting future conditions. I just don't see why you'd want to spend money so that you can pull out your phone for it to say it's hot when you can already tell.

If you have home automation you need it as a sensor for the computers, not primarily to know what the weather is which can be optained from other sources. Hence a simple weather station doesn‘t make much sense. But if you have rain indication, rain amount, light sensors and local wind strength, the home can react to this very local events accordingly. i.e. when it rains, it makes not much sense to let the mowing robot out, or to water the garden. When storm comes up, the window flaps can be closed automatically.

So one must see it as a big sensor array for the computers, not necessarily to watch the weather itself (but you can). I don’t even have a dedicated display unit but web interfaces instead.

Installed a Ecowitt WittBoy (their take on the tempest), seems to work well data generally agrees with other nearby sites.

The various web/could weather platforms don't seem to understand the peizo electric rainfall sensors. With regards to the sensitivity to rainfall it only really seems to detect actual rain, drizzle is completely missed not enough force behind it I guess. Will need some actual rain though for a see how well it actually works, the 5min shower and 1hr of drizzle isn't really much of a test.

Simple little unit and very easy to set up, the combination of super-capacitors linked to the solar panel and a pair of AA batteries for back up power seems decent and works pretty well, will be interesting to see how long that lasts. The software is pretty basic but easy to use and manuualy calibrate if needed.

Site for anyone interested

What I like about my Davis weather station is it makes me more tuned to the weather outside, the relationship between the direction of the wind the changes in barometric pressure.

Seeing the change in numbers which I can't really appreciate with the changes in weather that I experience.

Why does the sun today feel different from the sun last week. What's the heat intensity? Could/should I put solar up, how much power could I generate in winter.
What's the wind speed like over the year and how does that correspond to requirements for wind generation.

To those that say Dunedin is cold and grey, I used to quote sunshine hours or how my deck in summer gets to low 30s C.

My third Tempest is on its way.

This time the battery on the current one hasn't charged since about 26th April despite the good weather we've been having. So it's slowly discharging and is about to enter one of the other modes that will start to disable the sensors.

I contacted customer support yesterday, they replied overnight saying they can see there's something going on with it but they'll send out a replacement. At least their customer support is top notch, not sure why I seem to keep receiving the lemons!

Wouldn't be so bad if you could make marmalade out of those lemons!

That's some really crap luck! Makes me feel like it's only a matter of time before mine has issues. ☹️

From some of these comments would it be right to say that the Tempests aren't necessarily the most reliable pieces of IT gear ever made? Just wondering at the apparent high failure rate...

Another datapoint. I was one of the first to get one in NZ and it's been perfect since installation.

my fine offset clone is coming up four years old. I haven't even changed the batteries and it is providing more accurate data than a nearby tempest.

Yeah it’s hard to quantify. There’s hundreds in use around the world but who knows how many of those are originals or have been replaced. There’s people on here still going strong with their first one, and there’s people like me having really bad luck.

Its still on a pole in a bucket of gravel on the lawn because I have not got around to sorting out somewhere to put the ladder to get onto the roof. Its becoming more urgant as the silicone around the old TV antenna wire entry is failing again and the bucket in the loft is filling rather than drying out.

The invoice shows it as a

It seems to be getting enough sun to work despite being shaded by the house mostly. It certainly hasnt run the AAs in it out yet. Havent even really looked at the app at all yet beyond logging in and checking it worked.

Hopefully you can get it working for winter, they have good reviews. I am looking at this model https://www.ecowitt.com/shop/goodsDetail/1
