The eufycam 2 pro 2k kit just arrived.

If I set it up at my place, will it still work when I take it to mum's place later?

CrazyM: Are people still keen on Eufy after the latest surfacing privacy issues? Summary at 27:16 in the following video

https://youtu.be/zYpyS2HaZHM

I wondered that too. Basically it seems Eufy is storing full resolution snapshots from your video cameras on their servers, tagged with facial recognition, when they claim that your data is only stored locally and not in the cloud. This seems to happen if you use the web ui or not, and while they claim it's done for notification purposes and deleted afterwards, tests seem to indicate the images are not deleted even if you delete your Eufy user account.

Also, and probably more concerning, it would seem the photos and your video camera streams are available online unencrypted and with no user authentication required to view them. Not that it's likely for someone to guess the URL to your feed, but that's still really bad.

Thought this would be getting a bit more traction here, this is seriously terrible. Was so close to picking up some Eufy cams but they are off my list forever now.

Go for it.  Love my Eufy setup.  It has been reliable as well, can live stream remotely if required so I can see if the Mrs has hung the washing out (lol) or what the weather is doing whilst away.

I recommended EUFY to my mate but PB Tech insisted he get the EZVIZ cameras instead.  We set these up in the weekend and what a PIA.  Do not recommend.

I have had the Eufy Cam 2c Pro 3 camera set for 12 months now.

Battery life is good but as reported in this thread, they don't pick up movement until reasonably close to the camera which is a problem for me as I live down a long driveway so only record movement when within say 8m of the camera.  The other issue I have is you can't combine Geofencing with a schedule (you can do this with Arlo cameras). I work from home and would like to use Geofencing for when I duck out during the day, but I also want it scheduled to be active say 10pm to 7am. Unless the new homebase allows this, currently I can't combine them both. On other threads, this seems to be a common request of Eufy to implement.

I just bought 2 spotlights with cameras and their home alarm kit.

I was going to get some internal cameras for some rooms instead of motion sensors, but yeah that totally put me off.

I may still get some exterior cameras, or I may just look at some IP cameras and completely self-host to a NAS.  their solar powered cameras are tempting though.

but yeah.,... no way am i putting their cameras inside my house now.

after closer investigation, this seems to be what they're doing

1. saving a thumbnail for notification images to amazon cloud, which is cached for 48 hours (could be longer, but since thye have to pay for the storage, unlikely its kept for a long time).  They need to do this for the thumbnail notifications, fair enough.  Unsure if turning off thumbnail notifications stops the upload or not (if it doesn't then they need to s/w fix this ASAP).

2. the VLC thing seems bulls**t, they expose a RTSP stream for other software to use (blueiris etc) which sure, its unencrypted, but unless you are port forwarding that port, its a nonissue

3. homebase 1 and 2 computes the event history in the cloud, which is a list of all the events and thumbnail urls for them.  home base 3 is more powerful and does this locally.  this is a somewhat concern, but minor IMO.

4. The "sync" button.  thats the real big issue IMO.  Being able to just walk up to a camera and hold "sync" for a few seconds to have that device disappear from a homebase.  Some people are reporting it deletes all the data.  it doesn't, it hides the device from the home base.  if you resync it, the videos are restored.  so they can fix this in software but showing "removed" devices footage until deleted or something

4a. Being able to "sync" to a new home base without a "leave" request from the original home base.  This means someone could steal a camera, and use it on their system, or steal and sell that camera easily.   This also should be able to be fixed in software, but would require the homebases to be updated to check if a device has been deregistered and if it hasnt, email gets sent to the owner.  This isnt a easy fix, and they will probably say this is to hard.

Yes you could steal an IP Camera by just ripping it off the wall aswell and hit reset, but IP cameras usually have cables to make that more difficult, eufy cameras are usually easy to remove (if reachable).

tl;dr: linus and luke were completely misinformed and overreacted.  they ignore the actual issue (sync button) and reacted to the wrong thing.   If you can place your eufy camera up high so no one could reach them, you should be fine.

Can we trust Eufy enough to make changes so the privacy issues are addressed? or time to go shopping for a new system?

the privacy "issues" arent really issues.  the device security issue I dont hold my breath on them fixing those on existing hardware.  newer models I'm sure they will fix at some point (unless the company collapses with all this misinformation being spread atm).

So I have no concerns using their cameras externally.  Internally I wouldnt use anything other than IP cameras that I could completely block from the internet.

But I'll be buying a eufy doorbell/door lock combo thing when theyre on sale next.

The Hook Up has a good take on it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_rAXF_btvE

Doesn't excuse Eufy for misleading consumers around the whole local only selling point, but it's not as dire as the internet is making it out to be
