freitasm: Amazon nice and fast as usual... New Kindle WiFi in the house (R) with current Kindle 3G+WiFi (L):

Is there a plastic film over the new kindle? The screen looks like it has got water on it...

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I haven't removed the protective plastic it was shipped with when I took the picture. All Kindles arrive with a protective plastic, like any other tablet of phone...

How were you able to pay using USD or set up your cc to use USD ?

I've never ordered from overseas mind you.

Oh and is the battery user replaceable ?

On the Kindle 3 it was but not easily.

Looking at the stats on the Amazon page the one with keyboard has twice the battery life (two months vers one for the keyboardless model). We got the case with the light but I cannot find anywhere what that does to the battery life. Anyone know? Might that be a issue with the smaller battery?

I already have a Kindle Keyboard, and was planning on getting another one for my partner - I have gotten tired of her stealing mine all the time,,,,,,

Now that the Touch has been released, I was wondering if anyone had any idea on how long it will be before the Touch is avaiable for order/shipping internationally (ie to NZ) ?

I understand that I could get it shipped to a US address, and then get it forwarded here, but I don't know anyone in the US (*that I trust enough*) to act as the intermediary...

Anyone know?

Like most people I'm interested in the Fire.  Assume that the export restriction will eventually lift?  Is it a supply issue do you think?

If push comes to shove, may get it shipped to a friend in the states, and get them to on-ship it....

There are package-forwarding services you can use. For example, this one: http://www.opas.com/how-it-works.php  I've not used them but they appear to be perfectly legit. There is a cost for the service, of course. Whether big outfits like Amazon are wise to (or care about) this "workaround" I don't know.

The problem with Kindle Fire is its use of Amazon hosted services - music, videos, movies. You probably can only access those in the US or through a proxy/VPN service.

Forgive my ignorance, but are none of those services available outside the US of A?  Or is it just the movies/video?

Like most people I currently use iTunes for music, but if there was an alternative that had some major attractions (e.g. keeping my music in the cloud so that I don't lose it when I get a hdd failure like iTunes (grumble)), I would seriously look at switching.

Again if it ain't there today, is there any indication that this will change in the near future?

The Amazon services are currently only available in the US.

A solution for the problem you have with iTunes is called "backup".

So you are saying that all Amazon services, with the exception of purchasing ebooks (ok, more limited library, but still not bad) are US only?  At least iTunes is global ...

I agree with the backup comment, but a problem is only a problem when you're aware of the issue.  :)  I had naively believed that seeing as they kept your transaction history etc that they'd let you re-download what you'd previously purchased.  Luckily I didn't lose too much (probably only an album or two)....

And there are plenty of Kindle ebooks you cannot buy from NZ. It's kind of weird that you can get the physical book sent to you but cannot buy the Kindle edition. As for iTunes being global - there are a helluva lot of albums that you don't see in the NZ store. And of course when you are using the NZ iTunes store the top menu is missing Books and TV Shows.

I am interested in the new kindle touch. It only ships to the US so the plan is to get the 'special offers' wifi version sent to a friend in the US who can forward it on to me.  Getting the special offers version makes it cheaper than the non touch version.

Just want to confirm that there wont be issues with using it in NZ.

I've met someone with a Kindle DX which still isn't available in NZ, and he had no problems. By default they come registered to your Amazon account, and with a name e.g. "Bob's Kindle". It'll be easier for you if you ask your friend to check the "Gift" option when making the purchase.
