You shouldn't have a problem... Only the Kindle Fire uses services not available here.

My only concern would be whether registering it outside the US will be a problem with the ad-supported version, but this thread says it will work: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=151514.

If the adverts are annoying you'll probably be able to "buy out" of the subsidy in the same way US owners can: http://www.the-digital-reader.com/2011/10/05/amazon-charged-me-30-to-get-the-adverts-off-my-k4/

If your purchase works with no problems be sure to let us know, although what I really want is a (cheap) Kindle DX.

Thanks Mauricio - My better half decided the latest version (Wifi, non-touch) would be a good gift for me - we used the GZ link and ordered late on a Thursday night - it was in my hands mid morning Monday - can't beat that!

Total landed cost in the end was NZD$171 - was funny to get DSE "pre-order" for november for $189.

The Kindle has boosted me back to reading again - in conjunction with project gutenberg (us and au versions - some books in the au repository are not in the us ...) I now have an extensive library on the kindle.

I've not yet encountered a kindle book that won't let me buy and download to nz?

I've been reading a lot more than ever before. Have bought whole series - currently on second book of the Karla Trilogy by John le Carre. What a style!

Interesting. This is a fairly recent change. Earlier this year many "top sellers" were not available to the NZ region. I noticed it especially on biographies and autobiographies that you'd expect to be big-sellers here. But have just preordered Steve Jobs and it went through with no problems.

I really do not like the 1-click ordering though. It's just too darn easy, but is the only way you can purchase Kindle books. It seems to be active so long as you have a cookie on your PC. I would far rather be prompted for my login before it'll let me use 1-click.

To be fair - I've not gone on a spending spree; although my wish list is growing by the day.

I suspect with 1-click (and in Kindle purchasing) my book purchasing will just increase (just like iTunes did for my music collection ...)

I'm afraid there are still regionally-restricted Kindle books. The reason it's not obvious is that they are no longer listed as an alternative edition. For example, if you search for "Getting Things Done" it'll only show the printed and audio books. However when I search for that book in the iPad Amazon app, it does show me the Kindle edition. You can't buy Kindle books from the Amazon app, so I added it to my wish list. I then opened my wish list on Windows. When I select the Kindle edition I then see "This title is not available for customers from your location: Asia & Pacific".

It's possible that Amazon has made more books available internationally, but I suspect the main change is to simply not list the Kindle editions where they are restricted. What you don't know about you can't miss!

Tuesday the 11th Oct, Order a Kindle from Amazon (via GZ link ofcourse), receive email on Wednesday saying its enroute along with tracking number. Friday the 14th at 1500 it arrives in Christchurch in my hands, 2 days after leaving Allentown PA US.

Sunday the 9th Oct, order an item from 1-day.co.nz, receive an email Wednesday the 12th saying its on its way. Friday the 14th 1500.... still waiting.

Very impressed with Amazon and DHL for the quick delivery, considering 1-day.co.nz is based in Hamilton and had a two day head start on Amazon.

Remember that NZ Customs will collect 15% GST on any imports where the GST is over $50. This includes freight. So you might buy two and be ok, but three will see you having to pay GST.

I heard this kindle has an integrated battery.
So unlike the Kindle 3, you can't even replace the battery if you managed to pry open the back cover.

Can anyone confirm this ? Is the battery glued in and IF...IF not then where can you find replacement ?

If you read everyday and use the wifi often, it's probably gonna crap out in 2-3 years.
Might seem a century in Tech term, but i still want to retain my kindle after that long thank you very much.

Im pretty much set on teh kindle. just gotta choose between 4 or 3.
3 is more likely my choice...just that the battery issue. (it's weaker too right?)

So which version are you looking at? Keyboard or none keyboard?

Concerning the battery I would actually expect it to last a long time. Unlike something like a iPad which needs charging every 10 hours or so of use the Kindle is measured more in terms of months. I would think you should get around 1000 charges from the battery that is a LONG time. Yes the battery will degrade over time but once again because it uses so little battery you should still be quite happy using it even if it needs a charge once a week.

The new none keyboard kindle does have a shorter run between charges (1 month expected) where as the keyboard has not changed (2 months) also half the storage at 2GB verses 4GB.

The last thing I'd worry about is replacing the battery because as Nety said, you're charging every few weeks vs daily for most other electronic devices.

Re: 4 vs keyboard. I've got both, and personally I'd go for the 4. I use my kindle for pure book reading so I never use the keyboard or speakers. The 4 also has a faster CPU so the page turns are quicker, and you can read 4-5 pages before needing a full refresh. It's also lighter and smaller.

The downsides to the 4 are half the battery life (which is it's major drawback), and half the storage (which isn't much of an issue at all).
