sonyxperiageek: Oh and not sure if I'll be able to redeem more than one free 3-months of Netflix if I buy more Chromecasts..?

And if post #15 from this Canadian thread is anything to go by you are not going to be able to cast Netflix to it anyway as we have to use UnoTelly on Unblock US or a VPN here in NZ and this post from Canada is suggesting that ChromeCast did not like that.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43991867

I will just stick with my 7m HDMI cable from my iPad to TV.

Well actually the Netflix app didn't work. Downloaded it from another site, but it wouldn't connect to their servers anyway.. Since that doesn't work, I would use Netflix on Chrome browser then cast it over to the TV. And since I am on Slingshot, I don't have to pay for additional VPN services! :P

can't see why the netflix app wouldn't work.

if you have a vpn setup via dd-wrt on a cheap $60 router like the cisco e1200  ... then connect chromecast to that ... ditto yr phone or tab ..and how are those devices going to know otherwise?   unless they do some google account checking like the play store does :/

Could be two reasons why the Netflix app doesn't work: one is what you said, maybe it does some Google Play Store license check, or second is that the Slingshot Global Mode doesn't work for apps...

Apparently it also requires the chromecast and google cast extensions on your device, which are forever present on google play. IF YOU LIVE IN THE STATES! Regional eligibility restricting them for me.
Supposedly works on iPad, however that must be tied to using the chrome browser on your IOS device?
Sounds like there is lineup of apps to come for chromecast, just have to wonder how many we get to use in NZ.I will probably buy 2 of these anyway :)

Can we expect to see the feature supported by our OnDemand providers?

Does TVNZ even have an Android app yet? What about TV3? Lots of potential!

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

No TVNZ app for Android.. and we'll probably have to wait until Chromecast officially launches in NZ.

Also remains to see what the video playback quality is like, if the device doesnt do braindead underscan like other android based players etc.

If it would work as a uPNP renderer with good codec and container support and played with zero dropped/duplicated frames I would be interested, if it just shows a walled garden of licensed content and poor quality display mirroring then probably not.

It's a "web TV" device, not a dlna device.

Currently, it wont play your stored media.
Apparently it doesn't mirror a display at all, It goes straight to the web source that you send it to. So it will play anything chrome will.
And there's an SDK and API that can used for websites to include their streaming on the device.

OR, cut the HDMI cable with an Apple TV

And then (if you own a compatible Mac) when 10.9 comes out you can then use the TV as a 2nd screen too

I am sure all is not lost with using the ChromeCast outside the US with something like NetFlix and Unblock US. Unblock US seem to be very proactive so I am sure once there are a few of these things in the wild they will sort it out.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I had a quick play on you tube & Netflix
Video playback & quality fine. No issues with streaming
