zocster: In the meantime, have a good read ...

Hi,

Thanks for this, great read. I've seen this before but it's good to get a version saved.

We have already set things up to address most of the issues raised in this report well before we launched.

As the operating environment changes or we get new devices or upgrade existing hardware we will continue to upgrade our security measures.

Cheers,
Leon

We keep our security setup very close to our chest so I can't go into detail. That said: password strength, customer I&AM data, customer personal/payment data,  data transport encryption and other areas have all been focused on before we raised the curtain. We regularly test our systems for security as do Alarm.com.

I'm assuming someone with a bit of tech nous could order themselves a very similar collection of sensors online for a lot less cash, set it up with a prepay SIM, and monitor it via a web interface so it will work on any device. Someone like Sumnerboy can probably point in the right direction.

I would advice against pre-pay SIMs. Especially if you have no good way of getting notified if it runs out of credit. Don't know how its here, but in some countries a pre-pay subscription that is not used (if you have a system that is not using the data because its sitting idle), risk having their SIMs disabled for not being used.

If you look at the monthly subscriptions, I guess $30 a month is not bad, depending on how much data you are actually getting on the subscription.

Could you let me know if the smoke alarm will trigger video/images to be sent together with the alarm? Would be a good way to be able to (at least partly) be able to figure out a possible false alarm.

Also, what standards do the smoke detector conform to? EN14604? Any British Standard? UL?

Aaaand.. why on earth is it limited to Spark broadband customers?

I'd understand the mandatory restriction to Spark if there was a pricing incentive to compensate. But there's not.

There is, if you sign up for Morepork, then leave Spark, it costs an extra $10 a month.

Hi,

The smoke alarm when activated can trigger an alarm event. You can setup camera/image sensor notifications to automatically save images/clips when an alarm event occurs.

In terms of false alarm verification, the best way would be to use the video camera of image sensor. In beta a tester had a fire and used the video to verify the alert and call the fire department.

The Smoke alarm conform to UL217.

We have committed to providing Spark customers first access to Morepork, we will likely open this up to non-Spark customers at a later date but we haven't set a timeframe yet.

As a Spark customer with an existing wired system, I would like to see an interface box which converts existing motion sensors and fire detectors to the new system. The new wireless sensors and video would be used to improve the systems coverage and enable me to drop the existing copper based signalling which Spark wants to move fibre customers off.

Good luck making something compatible with the 50 different protocols and systems out there.

I think $30 for self montioring, vs using a traditional company, that does full monitoring for around this price, makes it quite pricey. Can't you get traditional alarm so you can self monitor at no additional price. eg it texts you when it is activated. It is a nice idea, but I think the pricing is too high. I recall doing a spark survey on this type  of product. They were also looking at UPS's so they seem to be getting into a whole lot of new services to make their broadband more 'sticky'. Email used to the be 'sticky' service, but people ahve now moved to non ISP email services.

I reckon wait 12 months. It looks like a good product, but pricing is too high to encourage sufficient take up me thinks - especially given its stickiness. Once competing products start to arrive, Spark's pricing will adjust.

Arrowhead alarms do a IP module for their alarm panels that will let you monitor your alarm/receive notifications/remote control via an app for your smart phone.

this can be done now easily. there is only one main protocol being used for home security monitoring - ContactID

there is alarm monitoring protocols (like Contact ID) to IP converter available to enable you to either self monitor or send to a company.

being in the industry the MorePork system seems overpriced, as most of your existing home alarms (less than 10y olds) can dial your cellphone using analogue lines or then monitor via email with IP converter. systems like the DSC, Paradox, Bosch and some others are all capable of calling a cell phone.
and they all have compatible IP monitoring module or use third party.

you can also easily setup IP cameras to go through to your mobile and these can email pics/video on motion or when alarm is activated using your existing internet with no 3g/4g controller, and this means you can be with any ISP.

Im spark customer but would't sign up to this, mainly as I have cameras with remote access and alarm monitored over Fibre that I also get notifications from.
