@danepak, I suggest that for a long trip, comfort is more important than ANR quality. And, for budget headphones, the best thing to do is to buy secondhand. Headphones pretty much don't wear out, and people who like the latest will often sell headphones in excellent condition at reasonable prices.

agree with @danepak
I bought my Sony's WH-1000XM4 secondhand and came in pristine condition.

makes perfect sense... the only thing i'd be wary of is the condition of the battery.

maintaining a bluetooth connection to 4 devices simultaneously is a tough ask. i don't know of any headphone/headset that does that.

Airpods, as I understand it, can seamlessly switch between all of the devices attached to your iCloud account. It works really well for me, but it would be a different story if I ever had to use them with a device that's not iCloud compatible.

If you have the budget I can highly recommend the Panasonic Technics A800..;

I bought some cheap ANC Panasonic headphones about 10 years ago, about $30, and they worked well, particularly on a trip to Melbourne on noisy planes. I've since graduated to Sonys, after the plastic cushions began to breakdown.

I've had similar experience - a reasonably cheap pair of Panasonic ($80 ish) have been good enough to turn the dull roar in the cheap seats of an aircraft into a much more muted sound.  Helps greatly with movie dialogue and getting to sleep (sometimes simultaneously!).  I'm sure they're not a patch on the quality ones but for kids on a trip, OK

Last time I visited Noel Leeming they has an excellent stand with multiple models for comparison. Remember that the store environment is atypical unless you live in a store. I found Bose dealtt with alll the bass and music in the store the best. For my day to day typical use I actually prefer Sony.

dimsim: This may be a silly question - but are any of these particularly adept at handling pairing and use with multiple devices?

I recall Bose QC35II were excellent for multiple devices. I have not used mine regularly for a while. The manual says eight stored devices and two simultaneously. As I recall it's a momentary press to switch between stored devices sequentially. Check the manual to verify.

In regards to the QC25, does the ANC still work, if you haven’t got the cable attached?

danepak: OK, going on a long trip in July (Denmark) and keen on noise canceling headphones, especially for the kids.
Never owned a pair before. Bought some cheap ones from Kogan (EC-65). ANC is rubbish, so returning them.
I’m on a budget (under $100).

Are you looking for a single pair for yourself to drown out the sound of your kids or other kids on the airplane or something for each of your kids?

I agree with earlier comments about buying secondhand. My wife bought a pair of Bang & Olufsen Beoplay h9 or h6 ones on TradeMe for $150 compared to their original price of around $700 and they were in pristine condition - the prev owner didn't like the sound. Bought them initially for a flight to Japan. While the ANC wasn't quite as good as my Sony XM2's, they are made from milled aluminium and leather and are not only beautiful they are tough. Only catch was when plugged into the airplane via cord, there was a major buzz which I've never heard on anything else...

Try another socket or cable to be sure.

Instead of spending $100 on a cheap ineffective pair of noise cancelling headphones, you would be much better off just spending $10 on some foam earplugs from the chemist.

to suppress noise, perhaps... but you can't use those for in-flight entertainment.

Well you can sort of. You put them in yours ears, and then put the other headphones over them. Does work surprisingly well - but might be too finicky for kids.

ANC is obviously best, but I find it easier to sleep with plugs. Headphones make my head too hot for meaningful sleep and they get bumped off when your head flops about.

Selecting seats further up the airplane ahead of the wings also helps a little.

Agree earplugs are very effective for plane noise and entertainment with any kind of headphones over the top. One piece of advice. For this purpose get mild reduction rated plugs or you will annoy other passengers with super loud headphone volume.
