@amanzi YMMV depending on what speakers you have - this post may help.

I didn't think the new app was compatible with the legacy S1 speakers? I assume that anyone using the new app would have S2 speakers? Is that not the case?

I'm thinking of selling my Sonos gear this year and switching to a Wiim-based solution. Not sure how feasible this is right now, but there are already some smart speakers compatible with Wiim, so things are moving in the right direction.

Wiim is compatible with linkplay, and I have had many of the same issues on my wiim and linkplay devices, and its luck if the 2 will group or not as apparently that is not supposed to be a supported thing to do yet it used to work perfectly.

I think that whole house audio is just hampered by the patents on using an internet server to coordinate them that everyone has to work around.

Yep - new app not compatible with legacy speakers. However I don’t know if S2 is totally incompatible with legacy speakers - or if it just causes problems. As was the case with the OP, we don’t know what speakers amanzi has. It may not be safe to assume because amanzi is using S2 he has S2-compatible speakers - eg. his IKEA-badged speakers. He may have a mix of legacy and non-legacy speakers - which was essentially the OP’s problem.

Yes, I have all S2 compatible speakers. For those curious, only S2 speakers work with the new app, but some older S2 speakers can also work with the S1 app. https://support.sonos.com/en-nz/article/sonos-app-version-compatibility

I'm still curious if there's any correlation between Android and iOS users when it comes to app issues.

Interesting reading this thread. I have four Sonos devices (two of them are IKEA branded) and try to avoid using the app if I can. That's made easy if you use Spotify or AirPlay - I don't think my wife or kids even have the Sonos app installed. But my experience of the Sonos app continues to be subpar. Often, I'll open the app and will be greeted with a "no products found" screen, and to have force-close and re-open the app a couple times to get it working again. Once the app is actually up and running, it's really slugish, selecting groups of speakers is unintuitive, and browsing through music services feels clunky (although this was also the case with the previous app.)

I am wondering if there's any correlation between iOS and Android users with regards to how the app performs? I'm on Android, but don't know if the app is any better on iOS?

All the issues you list above with the Android app are consistent with my experience with the iOS app following the upgrade from S2 to S3.

I see that the day following the fall of the CEO, the incoming interim CEO sacked the Chief Product Officer (who had a significant hand in the app upgrade), so the recent changes at the top may improve the outlook for Sonos users, but I am not holding my breath.

I am also keen to look at a move to a Wiim-based solution - so if you do move, it would be great if you could post how you find things.

One of the key "sonos-specific" features we use often is the ability to long-press the button on the Kitchen One speaker to get the TV audio playing on the Lounge soundbar. Not sure if that would be possible to replicate using Wiim. But for other stuff, I have simple requirements that Wiim should easily be able to handle.

I have six Sonos in total:  1 x Gen 1 Play 5, 2 x Play 2, 2 x Play 3 and 1 x One SL.

The Gen 1 Play 5 was the only speaker that was unable to be upgraded from S1 to S2; the Play 1 and Play 3 speakers were ok to upgrade to S2.

S2 was released in 2020. Both my Play 1s and Play 3s were upgraded to S2 and all worked flawlessly for four years until the S3 app upgrade in May last year.

From what I have read, it does appear the S3 release may have impacted the older speakers more significantly than newer ones, but this is anecdotal.

I am currently running my five older speakers on S1 and the One SL on S3. I have ongoing issues with the One SL on S3 - the prime issue being the app unable to find the speaker and a speaker reboot being required to reconnect. That said, S3 is marginally more stable that when all speakers were on S3.
