It is in the US, yeah. According to the manual any purchases and sync stuff is free, but the browser isn't?
Suck: @vodafonenz @kyhwana it's free to download books, not free to browse. ^PB

So meh, i'll stick with my wifi version.

The "country specific" information page says about New Zealand "access websites like Google and Wikipedia via a Wi-Fi connection".

I guess that's the answer - 3G access is only for books.

Yep. :) Looks like I made the right choice, a couple of workmates were interested in the kindle 3's, will suggest they stick with the wifi version too.

I am thinking of a Kindle 3G, only because you can buy books from anywhere, without having to either find some WiFi access point or having to pay mobile data roaming if using a mobile to tether...

Ordered the 3G for the misuses I think the price difference for the 3G is worth it, it will be useful on the bus at the batch and so on.

Also worth noting that if you intend to have multiple Kindles in your house I think it's worth buying them and your books through one amazon account, because this means you only need to buy a book once and it can be downloaded on up to 6 devices (pc, droid count as devices too though).

Apparently if you're reading the same book on two devices at the same time and you're up to different page #'s you may need to turn off automatic whispersync as this remembers where you are up to across devices which would be good for one person but annoying for two reading the same book.

Kindle 3G/Wifi + Lighted Case + Shipping... came to just under $400.

Should get through customs without attracting GST!

I dunno, how often will you REALLY be buying a book where you don't have wifi or landlinde 'net access via a PC?
Doesn't seem worth the extra ~$80NZ.
Just make sure you load up with books before you go somewhere? ;)

Btw wifi tethering doesn't work with the kindle. Doesn't accept p2p adhoc wifi connections or enterprise wifi. Tried it on my iphone and on the Otago uni network.

There are programs that make a Windows Phone and Android "appear" as a standrd WiFi access point. It works with that ;)

Ok. I've got the new Kindle, and the Kindle app on my iPad. I've purchased a few books. Now I've decided that I want access to the US store, so I set up a US account with a US address. If I attach the Kindle to the new account, will I lose the books I've already purchased?
