Just wondering if there is a way to stop Alexa offering the amazon music free trial? kids were asking Alexa to play some songs (normally off Spotify) then she says the song is on amazon music and would we want to start our free trial.

Mine offers the free trial and then wont let me have it because of billing problems which is even more annoying. Not found a way to stop it offering that to me.

Does anyone know if the older echo devices have less functionality?

I have added a new smart home device and all the echos seem to know about it except for the original dot.

I can't see anything in the config for the device which associates it with specific devices and didn't do anything on the others for them to know about it. I've also manually told this dot to do a discovery and it says it can't find anything new.

It's been rebooted a few times but still no good.

Some of the older echos do not have the ability to see Hue bulbs natively (you need a Hue hub). The echo plus do.

@klathman some of those Echo devices are... strange. I have an Amazon Echo and a Fire TV Gen 1. There's no way for the Amazon Echo to send commands to the Five TV Gen 1 - it always says "I am having trouble communicating with your device."

Both in the same network, my smartphone Alexa app can see both but one can't see another. Annoys me to no end. Search tells me to wait for a firmware update - well both devices have been up-to-date for months and never "connected".

Just one of those things.

Ah well. Might need to look at upgrading it then. The Amazon deal for a Show + dot + bulb for $179 is looking quite attractive. Not sure whether the bulb will work but it's a freebie anyway.

Interesting new feature here in the UK with Amazon Echo where you can link your Vodafone account to make calls direct on an Echo device.

I've got an Echo Show 5 on order also if anyone wants to know anything about it. Should be here next week I think.

Are anyone familiar with Echo for the car?

I'm considering it, but have a few questions:

Can I make calls, without unlocking my phone?
How fast is the cigarette charger, in regards to charging my phone? I've got a Galaxy S7 and my current car charger charges it 'very fast'. Don't really want to compromise and have a slow charging phone, while using Alexa in the car.

I've seen Ankor with a cool product, where it's a superfast car charger with Alexa built into it.

Other products I'm looking at is Muse https://museauto.com/products/muse-auto

And then the official one

Well, something changed in the last few days. I am not able to say "Alexa, open Stranger Things on Netflix" and it will start the app on my Fire TV. I can also say "Alexa show my driveway" and it will show my Ring camera on my TV via the Fire TV - something that I could only do via the voice-enabled remote control before. So now I am happy...

Yeah I noticed that the echo in the kitchen is now picking up the "turn on the TV" and doing it rather than saying it doesn't recognise the device name.

The dots are still acting dumb unfortunately and not seeing devices even on the latest version.

rogercruse:...Still waiting for the Echo Auto device to become available so I can have Alexa in the car...

At last!

I've had to use YouShop as they won't ship directly to New Zealand, so I should get a delivery sometime next week.

It'll give me something to do while I'm put on hold this Vodafone Customer Care as they sort out my Account Merge (see too many other posts!).

This is the first of the Echo devices I've been really interested in, and wasn't aware of it until reading this post - having a decent digital assistant (with much more smarts than Google Assistant can currently offer) in the car makes total sense to me, given it will hopefully mean fewer distractions when driving.

I wonder how much longer the invite-only purchasing model will be in place; I've requested mine, but what's the bet it's at the full $50 by then.

@rogercruse: how long did it take for your invite to be 'granted', and what did you pay for YouShop shipping? Thanks.

I clicked on the order button for this product was announced last September / October.

As the product isn't available unless a service like YouShop or similar is used, then I'll use YouShop.

And based on my previous YouShop usage, I expect the YouShop costs this time to effectively double the overall price for this item.

Again, the product isn't available unless you trans-ship.

I pre ordered when this was announced sometime last year, got an invite on the 4th Jun, got it sent through YouShop arrived on the 20th Jun.

Amazon charges came to ~$49 NZ, YouShop was $22.

I'm guessing invites will come through a lot quicker now...
