richms: Is there any _real_ difference between the E26 and E27 lamps? Only asking because local E27's fit fine in my US sourced lamps, and the E26 LED's I have bought in the past are no different it seems. Will probably order E27 anyway but just wondering if its real or just in the dropdowns to make americans feel safer ordering them?
richms: Seems the current wifi base doesnt support multiple sets of lights
qyiet: I got my set last night, and they work bloody well. I only got white bulbs, not colour ones.
Here are my impressions so far
- The brightness isn't an issue with the white lamps
- The build quality on the bulbs is much better than I expected
- The wifi bridge could be more polished for general consumers
- I had some fittings that were a pain
Brightness
With all the descriptions of the white bulbs as 50-60w equilivents I was expecting to have a compromise with brightness, in my head a 60w bulb is a dim one. So I was making a tradeoff when I purchased them: Max brightness for control. However when I rigged my house up with them last night all the lighting seemed as bright, if not brighter than my existing bulbs (mostly the bayonet fluros). This was an awesome surprise. I stated previously that I would have preferred a brighter lamp, I take that back these are great.
Build Quality
Given the price point on these bulbs I expected everything to have been cut to the finest cent. However the bulbs themselves felt like a hell of a step up from the regular bulbs, with nice machining and a really solid feel. Was very pleasantly surprised.
Wifi bridge
Works well, but doesn't have polish on the software interface. Pretty much anyone who looks at stuff here would be fine with setting it up, but I'd not want to give it to my dad. He'd get it, but it would be hard and messy. As much as I hate the sort of skin firmware updates that ISPs often put on routers they provide, that sort of update would definitely go a long way to helping the novice user during setup.
Fittings
Two of my light fittings had an additional collar that raises around the bayonet. These were clipping the base of the bulbs and I was unable to seat the bulb. I was able to fix one by dissembling the shade, then reassembling it with a much tighter fit. The second one had an additional issue of the way the shade worked the bulb would have looked silly in it anyway so I didn't attempt it. I'm going to replace that shade to get these bulbs to work.
Overall
Fantastic value, the diming and colour temp features are awesome. It'll be defining which light fittings I get by if they work with these bulbs in future. I'd easily recommend them, but if setting up an adsl router via it's web interface sounds like a hard task, get some help with the wifi box.
I will look at getting some colour bulbs in the future.
