Good question. I did check for one video last night. Youtube and Fire OS agreed on the codec for that one, but I'll check out some more tonight.
tim0001: Would be interested to know what codecs Chrome/Brave will use. So it would be great if someone could tell me please.
richms: Is this different to what the youtube player shows as the codec? Because I am seeing heaps and heaps of AV1 on the stats for nerds page of youtube. Even old 480p stuff is getting AV1
There's an app called threenow

Chrome will use AV1 CPU software decoding if your CPU is fast enough. Chrome will use AV1 hardware decode in preference if GPU supports that. Chrome supports 264, vp8, vp9, AV1, and more. Brave generally the same as chrome may have differences. If video is playing both will tell you via built in Media Panel
I'm having a few difficulties testing Brave because I don't have an OTG cable for a mouse/keyboard. Found an app that allowed me to use my phone as a mouse, but it was very buggy and I had to stop testing before I could set the AV1 preferences in youtube. I got as far as playing VP9 youtube, so still uncertain whether Brave will play nice and use AV1 HW decoding on the Firestick.
I mainly watch on a HD TV. We are on Starlink, so feel slightly guilty watching 4k. I think if everyone watched 4k on it then data caps would be inevitable. So I'm interested in using the most efficient codecs for HD. My HTPC only uses H.264 for HD netflix. The firestick mainly uses hevc for HD netfix, so thats a big improvement.
Potentially the Firestick 4k max could be helpful for slow internet/data caps. For example, a 3rd gen Chromecast won't even do VP9. I'm planning on doing some testing to quantify the bandwidth savings.
You only need this app to control your Fire TV and use your phone as a mouse/keyboard: Amazon Fire TV – Apps on Google Play
Anything else is suspicious and could be malware/adware.

Thanks. Slightly embarrassing, but I can't seem to get it into "Touchpad Remote" mode. How do I change it from "Simple Remote" mode?

can Freeview NZ Live TV be installed on these Fire TV sticks?
freitasm: TVNZ+ has recently renamed Favourites as My List. Has anyone else noticed that the Android TV app correctly shows My List but the Fire TV app is not showing neither the old Favourites or the new My List?
