They also used shoes, duct tape and bottles.

You jest, but that is not a generalisation. Several terrorists used the Casio F-91W because it is easy to modify and use as time detonators.

Ref. Casio F-91W, the Preferred Watch of Terrorists – WOE (watchesofespionage.com) and Casio F-91W - Wikipedia (including photos of schematics).

Stu:
@jonathan18:

Same for me, but only $5 for delivery. I know both Wellington region stores have stock, but they were the only ones in my neck of the woods.

Email from JB Hi-Fi for the Horizon I ordered

Firstly, we appreciate your patience; unfortunately, at this stage we are still unable to fulfil your order. Our buying team have advised us that this item is currently on back-order with our supplier.

The current ETA for this product is 2-3 weeks

Option to cancel, but I'll wait.

Update on this. The ScanWatch Horizon arrived yesterday. Rather pleased it didn't take the suggested "2-3 weeks"! To me, it's an adequate mid-point between a nice looking analogue watch, and a smartwatch. Whilst it obviously avoids the full features of a smart watch it has some rather nice smart abilities, which are completely invisible until you need them. Pretty sure this will be my daily-use watch going forward.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

I’ve been somewhat suspicious about differences in step counts between my new Withings watch and my previous Samsung (as I’ve been having to make a lot more effort to reach my daily goal), so in a tragic attempt to replicate the gorilla from the Richard Scary books I remember from childhood:

I decided to wear both watches on the same arm today. (Totally tragic look and somewhat embarrassing!) And the evidence is in:

So the Samsung’s reporting around 20% higher step count for today, but it’s more nuanced than that - on a long walk I did this afternoon they were within 40 steps, which seems to confirm my impressions that the Withings is really grinch-like as to when it starts counting steps. I’m ok with this, as I’d rather a higher proportion of my measured steps were from meaningful movement not just between the fridge and the bench! But just something to be mindful of…

The evidence is not conclusive. You would need three watches and see which number is common between two of them to conclude which one is wrong. At the moment either could be wrong...

We will need to see a photo of your arm with three watches.

The metrics provided by most of these watches are indicative only. The top rung Garmin, Suunto etc watches provide better results.

For those interested in controlled testing of the metrics measured by various sports watches, I highly recommend the YouTube channel called The Quantified Scientist.

dcrainmaker.com also does some good testing although I don't think he covers step counts as this is not something that sports enthusiasts would generally be interested in.

Challenge accepted!

  • Whole day: Mi 10% higher and Samsung 12% higher than the Withings, but if separated out:
  • 40 minute walk: Mi Band 4% higher, Samsung 1% lower than Withings
  • Remainder of steps: Mi 17% higher and Samsung 24% higher

My sense is accuracy between watches primarily comes down to how well they determine what is a true step as opposed to general arm movement, as there's not a huge amount of variance in straight-out step counting when walking proper. As I really do like the Withings it does look like I'm looking at having to fit in a decent amount more walking to make up for its counting, though...

And, thank god, I've run out of arm space to fit another watch!

Great effort but you're doing it wrong. For best accuracy it should be strapped just above an ankle ;p

@jonathan18 great effort, both in walking that much on a Sunday and wearing the watches.

When I had the gear S3 with it's floor climb counter it was obvious it was significantly underestimating reality
Maybe the one I had was faulty.

Anyway, it'd be great if some margin of error was provided with these metrics, be it step count, heart rate etc. Surely manufacturers have enough data from development and testing to generate error margins.

That explains the scary-looking guys I sometimes see at Countdown. They're just out for a walk!

In the last few weeks I have purchased a few watches including a Tissot, Citizen, 2 Casios and a Seiko. I might pause now
