Is it possible to turn a normal webcam into a security camera that I can access remotely? Ideally has iOS app too.

Altered my google search slightly and now finding lots of hits, examples below. So is there any service that someone already uses and can recomend? I don't mind small monthly fee

Shouldn't be too hard... as long as you're happy to dedicate a small box to running the webcam. You could use DDNS to give you an easy way to find it (unless you have a static IP where the webcam box is).

As for iOS app you'd have to find a webcam manufacturer that has one... I don't see why you couldn't just use your browser though and stream the video to it, you could perhaps set the stream resolution on the webcam so it would fit on your mobile screen without have to scroll around it.

I'd have to say though. If this is an actual security camera, or more accurately said, a camera that you and/or others would rely on for security, then you would want to make sure you have some kind of UPS etc for the box...

ispyconnect has all the bells and whistles but have to commit to 12 months sign up, where as gotocamera did all I need and is free as well.

Not really relying on it for security, just something to keep an eye on the dog during the day....

Im using yawcam which was surprisingly easy to setup and completely free.
Does motion detect, stream, http, probably some other random stuff but everything I need.

"What is Yawcam?
Yawcam is a shortening for Yet Another WebCAM software, and that's exactly what it is ;-)
More precise Yawcam is a webcam software for windows written in java. The main ideas for Yawcam are to keep it simple and easy to use but to include all the usual features."

Thanks, will have a play with that one as gotocamera is very basic.

I use Vitamin D video (http://www.vitamindinc.com/) - the free version works reasonably well with a single webcam.  You can set up rules e.g. take a picture and email me if object/person passes through a defined area in the video feed.

Hard to explain, but it's fairly polished and very easy to set up.
