I live in the country and am on a lite broadband plan with Farmside, so would prefer to browse Amazon and download ebooks by 3G rather than use my wifi. This doesnt seem to be an option on my keyboard kindle so dont suppose the Paperwhite model would be any different? Or is it possible and I am missing something??

Just don't enter in any Wifi details, and it won't connect to your Wifi.

You can't disable WiFi only, but you can "forget" existing WiFi settings so it won't automatically connect.

What a mind numbingly stupid omission. I end up putting my kindle in airplane mode!

Why would that be an omission? The Kindle won't connect to an open WiFi access point unless you set it to connect automatically, and won't connect to a protected WiFi access point unless you enter credentials, which you can later "forget".

If it can't connect to WiFi it will use 3G automatically if available.

In the case of the OP, it's not so bad because it seems like they don't want to be using WiFi at all.

However in a general sense, indeed, it is a bit of an oversight. Amazon have that feedback email address that comes up on the lock screen occasionally. perhaps some feedback is in order?

I don't mind having both on at the same time - usually I only have that on for a few minutes while getting a download done, so it's not even a battery burden, really.

Thanks for the feed back. I will remove my wifi settings so it only connects by 3G. Hadn't thought about that solution myself so thanks again.

I don't want it to connect to Wifi unless I say so. I want to be able to turn off Wifi to save battery, now I have to use airplane mode.

To save battery? Do you leave the Kindle wireless always on? I only turn mine on when downloading a book, or if I want to buy a book while away and use the Kindle store on the device itself, othewise it's always off.

off topic slightly, how does 3g work on these items, the father inlaw has one (3g), but when i ask who is the data plan through and what is the monthly charge, they say they dont know and have never topped the account up. Does kindle do this in the background, and then on charge the CCard the unit was purchased with?

3G is free on kindle for certain content like purchases from amazon.

The Kindle connects through the Vodafone network but it DOES NOT USE A VODAFONE ACCOUNT.

As said the 3G Kindle is free for accessing the Amazon store on device, and to download books. In the US it's free for browsing as well.

There's no contract, there's nothing. That's it. It doesn't matter whose network it uses, as it's an Amazon service, not a telco service.

I have just ordered a paperwhite for myself last week and received the email from youshop that it arrived there on friday. Is now on the way to NZ. No big Xmas delays for me in January.

Does it show you how much memory you are currently using ? It will have half the memory of my current kindle touch.

I wouldn't worry too much about memory, just remove old content from the device if you really need to store more stuff...
