Back in the day I had a Roomba.  I loved that little robot, but eventually it slowly died.  Since then I've not been able to source a decent cleaning robot in NZ.  However I saw that godfreys have a little thing available http://www.godfreys.co.nz/vacuum-cleaners/home-hero-robot-m688

It looks kind of nasty (and doesn't have scheduling.. which to me is the point of these things).  Does anyone have experience with the home hero, or a better source of cleaning robots in NZ?

What do you mean by the Roomba "slowly died"? I still have a seven years old Roomba going around the house. The only thing I did in these years was to buy a new battery out of Amazon...

Have a look at the 2013 Best Robot Vacuum Reviews and Comparisons

The irobot (Roomba 770) is the Rolls Royce of cleaning robots.
Been thinking of getting one for a while but have not taken the plunge yet ...

The battery was dead, but there was also a broken part inside that finally killed it.  (a gear or something.. I forget it was a few years ago now).  I guess the slow demise of the battery is what I was referring to.

Think my Karcher RC3000 might take issue with that, mind you you can get 4 x 770's for the price of 1 RC3000

Thanks for the link, that's really helpful.   Any advice for getting one locally? (youshop?)

Nothings beats the one I use to have in South Africa.
Unfortunately that one requires a work visa. Tongue Out

They advertised one on the Shopping Channel a while back.
Maybe check their website?

I've got a couple of Neato XV-21s, bought online from the US. I bought one for us, and then my wife demanded we buy one for her dad too :)

Better than wife approval: wife demanding replication.  That's a strong recommendation.

You can schedule once daily on the home hero.

I bought one for a one bedroom apartment when they were $200 ($300 now) and ended up getting another for our lounge in our house too (I live in two cities hence two abodes).

Have noticed no problems that are distinct to this model vacuum cleaner so far. It doesn't deal with cords on the floor particularly well, or mats/rugs on carpet, but seems to be a common complaint for robovacs.

I saw the top 10 review posted some time back and had my mind set on a roomba, until I realised you can't actually buy them here except on the good morning show. The model on the show is not the latest, and is not even on that list. I think they have it for around $1300 but don't tell you on TV you have to call and listen to their spiel before they actually make an offer.

Just about be cheaper to fly to sydney and pick one up there. It would be less annoying.

The price is what made me change my mind. 200 vs 1300 and for a single level one bedroom apartment how much cleaner is the roomba going to make it for the price difference?

For the house (3 bedroom) you would need two home heros as the batteries last between 45 and 60 minutes before it needs to dock itself for charging, which then takes up to 9 hours from dead flat to full. Going in and out of several rooms is a struggle, it is really best for one large room only. I tend to do the bedrooms and hall on manual. By that I mean I chuck it in the room and close the door and let it do it's thing for 15 minutes before moving to the next room.

It switches between lino and carpet no problem.

Overall - Good enough for me and I don't regret the purchase (except for the colour).

Sweet, damn good to know.  I would have put that prominently in the advertised specs for the device given that there doesn't seem to be detailed documentation available.    Thanks heaps for the detailed review.
