Imagine, a woman moves her arms or shuffles her feet and creates a sound out of thin air. That is my goal/project. I am a choreographer with an incredible idea, but don't know how to go about achieving it. I want to creating a new form of dance and movement using sounds created by the performers. In the past I used triggers attached to a backboard and each time you hit the board it created a sound.
Question: Is there a electronic device or gadget that can transmit signals to create sounds? I'm not familiar with electrons, so any help or direction would be appreciated. Where do I begin?

Thank you in advance,
TPL

Google the 'V motion project'. Lots on YouTube about it. Using Kinect sensors to trigger music.

THANK YOU!

No worries, some of the team behind it gave a presentation at TechEd recently, I found it fascinating.

How difficult would it be to recreate this? If possible, where would I start? When looking for a technician, what should I look for?

The Kinect is a good system to hack into this kind of project. But the performance has to be in front of a kinect camera/scanner.

For street art / performance art Another way would be to wire up a person with accelerometers, wrists, ankles, head, hips, torso and uses that data to trigger/generate sounds in a micro controller / mini computer.

The accelerometer capable of measuring tilt, acceleration, rotation, and vibration with a range of ±2 g
and generally communicates via SPI / I2C. So it could be connected to an arduino or a Raspberry Pi.
I would use a Pi as it has so much more processing power than an arduino as well as having sound generation abilities.

If you find somebody with an electronics hobby or want to develop this yourself, there is a range of sewable processor and sensor equipment based on the Arduino;  http://lilypadarduino.org/

An example of this in use would be
http://blog.arduino.cc/2012/10/11/wear-your-musical-interface/

I am not experienced enough with my Arduino to start offering assistance with such a project, just fiddling around with it so far, but there are plenty of people willing and able to give advice, if you scan some Arduino and Lilypad forums and blogs etc.

The video of the TechEd V Motion session can be watched online, with another session that goes into more detail about the technology behind Kinect..

This is AWESOME. As a result of all your replies and help, you have kindled in me a cauldron of ideas and creativity. I'm excited to implement much of the samples I came across in my research. I've decided to start up my own entertainment company which specializes in marrying technology and art together. I'll be utilizing the Geekzone community for unique ideas and gadgets emerging in the world of technology. So if you come across ANY technology that is weird, unique, awesome, strange or new, please don't hesitate to share. Thank you once again. I'm excitedly looking forward to hearing from you again

Let me know if you're every hiring sounds like it would be an interesting place to work. As far as gadgets go you would probably be interested in 3d printers they allow you to create 3d objects out of plastic in any shape you want. Animatronics is something you might want to look into as well.

Well friends... Things are moving forward. I'm in the process of looking for designers and programmers to help me recreate the work done on the "V-Motion Project". I am learning very quickly I can't just ask for a programmer, since there are many facets to programming. Looking at the V-Motion video, what would you look for, in way of motion graphic designers? I'm not familiar with technology and software. What abilities should I ask for when interviewing graphic designers? (I.e. C++, Java, Open Frame Works software...?)

It's been over year since the V-Motion Project was first done. Has there been new software that has emerged, making this project a bit simpler? Also, I'm not sure what is a fair salary to offer for this kind of what. What should I expect to pay... here in Canada?

Quote: 2 Kinects lying around, some knowledge of C++ and a copy of Ableton

Why not contact the guys that made the orgional and get them to build you a kit.
http://www.v.co.nz/#the-motion-project

Or you could write your own code http://learn.adafruit.com/hacking-the-kinect

But have you ever managed a software development project. Because this would be a complex software dev project and not really an amature deal my friend.

Ableton Software will cost from $450us - $750us + two Kinects CDN$ 262.20 each.
And a computer to do all the processing, graphics and sound.

A C++ developer is at least $6,790 USD / month
You would have to work out a detailed design of what you want this todo and then work out how many months it will take to write.

Thank you for the reply. In fact, the irony is, I received it just as I decided to contact them directly and see if I could purchase the "kit" off them. Thanks for the suggestion. I think I'll try that. Much easier. Will let you know how it goes.
