Hi all

I am wanting to put an 8 port gigabit switch into a distribution hub.

I alreday have a TP-Link TL-SG1008D switch handy.

The problem is that the hub does not have a normal power plug accessible in it but it does have a Hills Home Hub hps-25w18ac power supply which has 2 x 2.5mm 12VDC power ports available.

Am I able to find a power cable which I can plug into one of those ports that will be compatible with the switch I have?

If so I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

I have posted a pic of the distribution hub.

Also there is a patch panel in the hub but because I still need a switch I'm assuming it is easier to terminate everything directly to a switch in the hub as that's where the cat6 cable terminates.

I would check out Jaycar. They might not have the exact cable but they will have the parts to build your own.

Is the switch a 12V one?

If so you'll just need a 2.5mm -> 2.5mm or 2.1mm (depending on the connector) cable to connect it.

The switch is just a standard desktop gigabit switch.

You need to look at the power supply that came with the switch to determine what voltage it needs

tukapa1: The switch is just a standard desktop gigabit switch.

There is no such thing as a "standard" switch. There are lots of different power requirements for switches ranging from 5V up to 48V.

The first thing you need to do is determine what voltage the switch runs off.

The current rating is the second issue.

You have a "kettle plug" at the bottom of the power supply, get a splitter (or Y-cable) then you can plug in a second power supply for the switch.

You can never have enough Volvos!

Thanks for all your replies team.

Now I feel a little bit stupid - for two reasons mainly:

Not looking at the power supply first (which by the way says output 9V - 0.85A) and second for never thinking of a splitter or y cable for the standard power plug at the bottom of that power unit.

That's why you guys are here!

I've had a bit of a look and was thinking this would do the trick.

If I remove the plug from the Hills power pack in the hub and plug it into the input on that splitter then plug the output jug type connector back into the hills hub that would leave me with a normal power plug to utilise the power supply that came with the switch.

Would this work?

I'm unsure if I can get to the power socket in behind the hub to deal with it any other way - will have a look.

That would work, but if the Hills unit offers a battery backup function then this would not be passed onto your switch (I don't know what the Hills box does)

Thanks for that.

I can't see anything about a battery back up in the specs for the Hills unit so I've ordered one of those splitter cables.

Not cheap but hopefully it gets me up and running!
