Hi,

The LCD display on our cordless phone has suddenly gone strange - all characters are displaying but they are backwards like in a mirror. Has anyone seen this before? Can it be fixed or is it buy a new phone???

Its hard to figure out caller ID with everything in reverse...

The contrast voltage generator probably failed. Definitely not worth fixing, you will get cosmetic damage from opening the case and it is not worth it when labour is around $50-$100 (guess) per hour. At about $20 a phone, there are usually no spare parts available.

Not sure that would cause them to go backwards like in a mirror, probably more like the LCD controller chip has lost its settings and is back on default ones.

In anycase no service tech will look at something like that as the minimum charge is more than its worth. It would be like trying to get a CRT tv or a $40 dvd player repaired.

EMC/EMI standard changed a lot over the years, and even so manufacturers often ignore them anyway or just design to pass testing and not design for extra margin or to still pass years later when components have aged. Sounds like a port pin on the controller got stuck. Would not be the LCD itself, would be the controller (or power supply, there are a number of voltage generators for LCDs).

Out of interest, what brand/model?

Panasonic KX-TG161

A couple of years old and was cheap to start with so was quite happy to have to buy a new one but its now going fine again...

I have the same problem with my Siemens Gigaset A38H. It seems that when the batteries are fully charged its a bit better but even wIth new batteries its not resolved.
