Hi there

I just got a 30 gb video ipod. I dont have the new itunes software installed yet (version 7.2). How do you get the new 7.2 itunes without downloading it? I use to have broadband and have version 4.8 but Im on dialup so cant download the new software so I cant use my ipod!!

Another issue I have is not being able to charge my ipod through my usb port. I have tried all usb ports and my ipod doesn't charge on my windows pc . . . any ideas why? i can see my ipod on my computer so I don't think the usb cord is faulty . . .

thanks heaps if you can help

:)

Have you tried ringing Apple to see if they will post iTunes CD's out?

Are you trying to plug your iPod into a USB hub at all or straight into the PC? A hub may not have sufficient power to charge the iPod. If you're plugging it into the PC directly do you have other USB devices plugged in?

Did you get it new or 2nd-hand?  If it's new, it'd be a bit random that Apple would stop putting the CD in the pack (although nothing like that surprises me anymore)!

Do you have any mates with broadband?  You could ask them to download the install file and give it to you on CD/flash drive.

I didn't get an iTunes CD when I bought my Nano last month. I don't think this is a big deal though because all new Macs are supplied with iTunes (and have been for many years now), and those who don't already have it shouldn't have a problem downloading it.

Maybe most of those.  When I was on dialup not so long ago, I used to download the file at work and take it home on flash drive.  However, not everyone has that freedom at work.
I guess the alternative for those on dialup is to start downloading when you go to bed.  Some download managers have a setting to shutdown your PC upon completion so you don't even have to worry about the PC being on all night.

Last time I did an update it was about 50mb. I used to be on dialup of the worst kind....1 minor step up from a party line, so I understand the frustration.

Often the not charging problem is caused by the difference in usb protocols, 1.0 and 1.1 will enable you to see the ipod, add and remove files on there (albeit very slowly) but not charge. If you have usb 2.0 it will charge as well as do everything else.

I hate itunes, so much so I haven't even looked for an alternative, I change the music on my ipod once in a blue moon, I plug it in to synchronise my calendar and contacts list. My ipod is a tool I use to aurally learn new music to play, it enables me to do this without alienating the world around me (I perform a lot of celtic, jazz and folk which is traditionally aural and often the written version varies greatly from the played version).

These are tricks and tips and frustrations I have learnt

  • If the ID3 tags are corrupt itunes will silently reject the file and unless you check you wont know. MP3tidy is a program which fixes that annoyance.
  • You don't need to  transfer the files to the library, just link them.
  • You can change the album, artist and genre of multiple files at the same time in itunes in the properties. Just highlight and right-click on properties.
  • You can use a normal USB hub to charge an ipod (our kids keep one by the toaster - they plug their various devices into it at night and grab them on the way out the door in the morning)
  • BUY a cover, dont skimp on this. I also like the look of invisible shield.
  • If you buy a car kit, take the ipod with you to check the plugs. I have a Griffin Itrip Auto, I love it.
  • Be wary about buying many of the apple accessories, there are many good quality cheaper alternatives, such as using a hub.

Once you get the idea, it is not that difficult to use.

Protected is easy to sort (assuming you mean DRM) - burn to CD in Media then rerip back to iTunes.  Technically, you may lose a bit of quality but I've never really heard any difference.  Still, it is a bit of a pain to have to do.

Re: the corrupt files...  What format are your tracks and how are you transferring them?  What I got iTunes, I transferred all my wma files over (only took a couple of days of continuous processing) and I've never had any issues.

(Disclaimer - any comments discussing ways around DRM are intended for people who have actually purchased said music, not the naughty people)

just ever so slightly offtopic - but not worth starting a new thread

Media is not the best program with rip from cd's. There are hundreds if not thousands of far superior programs. Microsoft has built copy protection into the software, which basically means you play it on one computer only.

Shame is what you deeply feel when the artist of music you have "downloaded" prefers the compilation you have put together rather than the multiple albums they have released.

The copy protection on Windows Media Player during rip is only enabled if you check the box - it's not there by default and you can freely move your music from one computer you own to another.

If you have the copy protection enabled, you can backup the keys and restore in another computer when reloading your music.
