Hi all. The reno is near completion and I'm wiring up my patch panels etc into my dynamix enclosure (http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=408179). However being a newb, one thing I didn't even think about were switches and their actual physical size. They all seem rather large and I was wondering if anyone has one of these enclosure and what switch do you have?

Do you put them inside or run your patch cords out to an external switch?

I have 2 dynamix 8port panels, I'll need one of their phone modules, the fibre box will need to go in there and of course a switch. I'll probably put my wireless router out in the office.

Thanks
Aaron

my question is do you have 16 devices/ports you need connected?

something like this is pretty small
http://www.dlink.co.nz/products/?pid=999

maybe it will be easier to get 2 8 port ones?

+1   Try 2 x Cisco 100 Series SG100D-08 Switch, 10/100/1000Mbps, 8-Port RJ45 at $122 each

Thanks guys.

Right now, 8 would probably suffice but in about 2-3 months I'll need to go up once the front of house reno is complete.

I'm guessing I could probably tape/tie two 8s together if they are thin enough to fit in the box?

Cheers
Aaron

If you just wanted something small and cheap and didn't mind having 2 x 8 port units than the TP Link SG1008D's a great unit and can be had for about $35-40 each (8 x unmanaged Gigabyte). It is wall mountable but can also sit on a desk, very small (7.9*5.5*1.1 in. or 200*140*28 mm) and extremely reliable.

If you're also running out of power outlets something like the ES-5800G V3 Switch, 10/100/1000Mbps, 8-Port RJ45 may help - it can be powered by USB (DC 5V 1A) current, assuming you've got something with an available USB port hanging around in your enclosure.

I  bought cheapo switches in the past which either were too noisy or failed.

Ended up with this..

hp procurve 1810g fanless

Lifetime guarantee too .

Lessons in life, never scrimp on routers, switches, or master splitters :)

According to the HP specs, the smaller version - HP ProCurve 1810G-8 Switch (J9449A) - measures 11.63 cm deep x 19.63 cm wide x 4.39 cm high.
Would that fit in your cabinet?

Hmm, HP is a little sneaky..
HP V1410-16 is 16x 100Mb
HP V1410-16G is 16x 1Gb (which is what I have)

One thing I didn't ask because I didn't know if it was thing, but have seen it mentioned on some of the specs for the switches you have all posted, is does the cable type matter? I.e. some of them state Cat5 Or 5e as supported media but I haven't seen anyone say Cat6 yet.

I'm assuming it doesn't matter at all as it just seems silly. If the switch can support GB, it can support GB.
