Was just about to pull the pin on ordering the hi res Kindle Voyage today when I discovered that Kobo have just announced a new hi res Kobo Glo to go on sale 1 May. And, as a nice touch, it looks like NZ may be getting it on release day.

What really appeals about these new e-readers is a screen resolution that matches laser printer output, so looks like I will be retiring my old faithful blurry-font Sony ...

Nice.

If I hadn't just recently got the new Kobo Aura H2O, I might have been tempted by this to replace my Glo.

The Kobo software does have its glitches and bugs here and there, although most users won't run into them (I generally don't). I would say that the Kobo firmware is not as solid and robust as the older Sony's were, but then, the Sony devices were rock solid.

On the other hand, I believe that the Kobo software gives you a lot of options as far as reading settings (margins, line spacing, fonts, font weights etc.), including adding your own font if you so desire.

Also the Kobo devices are "open"*, if that sort of thing matters to you.

*Of course, the interface/store and reading programs are proprietary, and therefore closed. However the platform as a whole is open and requires no unlocking or jailbraking.

My partner's kobo aura has the occasional software glitch that requires a restart to solve - so, agree, not as rock solid as my Sony. The one annoying thing with Sony is the inability to change line spacing as text can appear squashed together with some font choices. The ability to change the look of the kobo with margins and line spacing options is great.

The new Glo HD is now on the Kobo website, but yet to show a buy now - I think release date is 1 May. Looks to be pretty similar in physical appearance to the existing Glo.
