My son has been saving up for a couple of years with the goal of getting himself a Lego Mindstorms EV3, and I'm wondering if anyone knows a good (and potentially cheap) source to get one from locally.  I've considered Amazon and Youshop, but Customs fees and GST would wipe out any savings.  They're horrifically expensive.

At this point, given the exchange rate it may be worth trying to buy one in Australia.

iqtoys.co.nz sometimes have them available, unsure if they can order on demand. Fishpond also will get them. Not sure what the pricing is like overseas, so not sure how either of these stack up.

Not sure they have the EV3, but you can ask.  Below retail prices, by a Kiwi family in Tauranga: http://www.hiskidsbricks.co.nz/

You can never have enough Volvos!

Can I ask what you paid for it at Toyworld?  I know RRP is $599, just want to see if I can get a better price.

Is there any update on the best place or the best deals for getting the Mindstorms EV3 kit? It looks like the RRP has been $599 forever, PriceSpy shows it has previously been on sale for $449, does anyone know which retailers are the best to keep an eye on?

I'd suggest keeping an eye on Toyworld and ToyCo. I got mine from Toyworld a few years back on 25% discount.

I don't think they're discounted quite as much as they used to be but they still come up at 20% off a number of times per year. Sign up to both mailing lists to get early notification of sales.
