I've been wanting to purchase an Ipod Touch for sometime now, but still unsure of it's internet feature, my whole family is on the move right now and the only internet access i have available is dial up, so i was wondering if anyone else out there have an ipod touch and give me some ideas on how good the internet connectivity is, can you actually get connected anywhere around NZ and such?
The iPod Touch uses wi-fi to connect to the internet. Wi-fi coverage is based on 'hotspots' and is not like mobile phone coverage where it is far-reaching and available almost everywhere. To give you an example, most Starbucks cafes are wi-fi hotspots, which means you can connect while you are inside or just outside a Starbucks cafe. Generally you will find them in public places where lots of people gather, like cafes, hotels, libraries, etc.
If you want to check out the availibility of wi-fi hotspots where you are, go to www.jiwire.com for a list.
In terms of how good the internet connection is, WiFi b/g (the most common ones and supported by iPod Touch) have a range of around 40m, 802.11b has a max of 11mbps, while 802.11g has a max of 54mbps.
Usually hotspots are around main public places (like restaurants and outlets e.g. Starbucks, McDonalds) and require you to pay . Telecom are rolling out quite a lot of them right now as well.
The public hotspots are unsecure, so don't visit anything that you might not want others to know...
