My girlfriend has just found that somehow our computer has completely wiped her iPod, so now I'd like to try and find a way that I can somehow back up what I have on my iPod on to our computer incase mine ever gets wiped. Is there a way of doing this without having to buy something? Does anyone have any free downloads they can recommend?

Also, in regard to her lost music, will there be anyway of getting it back? Apparently when she had it connected to the computer it said smething about a sync failing?

Unless you have deliberatley done anything (like use 3rd party software, or delete the PCs copy of the stuff that was on it), then everythng that was on the iPod is still on the PC. Simply re-sync it (maybe delete the partnership first) and everything should reappear after a long first sync.

iPod + iTunes is designed to have a library of stuff on the PC, and a copy of that on the iPod. Changes go both ways, but the PC always holds the master copy. Delete all the stuff of your PC, it disappears off your iPod next sync.

Thanks for your reply.

We still have songs on iTunes, however our iPods have (had in my girlfriedbds case) additonal songs that we have downloaded from other sources other than our iTunes.

Would these additional songs still be stored on our iTunes somehow? If so, how can we access them? If not, is there any way of copying the songs from the iPod back into iTunes so all the songs are on the PC?

iTunes does not sync songs from an iPod. There are shareware apps that enable you to do this (e.g. Anapod) but I've found the best is SharePod. This app resides on the iPod itself so there's no installation on any PC you hook up to. The only PC requirement is to have the .Net framework.

As lugh said, no sync from iPod stuff you have placed on their from other sources. As soon as you sync with your 'home' iTunes, it will all be gone again, with zero chance of recovery.

If you are going to do anything other than a normal all-my-stuff-is-on-itunes-on-my-pc sync, then you really need to go and spend 2 hours or more reading everything you can find about manually managing music on iLounge.com, before you even think about doing anything else with your iPods.

Sharepod is GREAT, and there is another one that is commercial software that I have bought which does EVERYTHING you could ask in terms of restoring iPods, and manually managing music and photos and videos and stuff. Check the time of this post, and please understand that I have no idea what its called at the moment. pm me, and I will let you know tomorrow the name of the software.
