I will be in Sydney this Tuesday 21st to attend the Parrot Minidrones launch event.

These include:

  • Jumping drones (terrestrial drones, WiFi, embedded camera/mic/speaker)

    • Jumping night (a version with night vision, up to 4 mph)
    • Jumping races (a version for competition, up to 8 mph)
  • Airborne drones

    • Airborne night (a version with night vision, 11 mph)
    • Airborne cargo (a version to transport small loads such as toy blocks, etc)
  • Hidrofoil drones (small flying drones which can be attached to hydrofoils and used in water)

More information here.

Any questions on these?

Excellent timing, I have a toy block in the lounge and have been wondering how I was going to move it to the study.

Were any Goldfish harmed in the making of their Hydrofoil promotional video, and was there a sale on '80s action movie soundtracks that week?

Seriously though, are they quieter now?
My neighbour could hear my last one, and the steam from their bathroom fogged up the lens.

I saw the advertorial on Macrumors a couple of weeks ago and I have to say, the hydrofoil one looks quite intriguing.

The idea of being able to detach the drone and fly it appeals, as it's a two-in-one device.

I'd be keen to see one operating on a local lake just to see what it look like when it's not in a massive pool in the back yard of some exec's mansion....

Given the amount of clearance (not much) I don't think it would fare well in any wind - but keen to see.

I can confirm that flying a Bebop drone in Wellington winds is fun - as in how can you control this thing when they are 100 metres up in the sky and there's a Wellington "breeze"?

Some very interesting things here. First the new airborne drones are only 60 grams. Very light. Yet, battery life is still around 10 minutes or so. On the other hand it fully charges in 25 minutes. The hydrofoil looks like fun (and can reach 10km/h on water) but not completely waterproof - some good questions on this from the audience and Parrot says damage would be assessed on a case by case basis. The new jumping drones can actually jump up to 80 cm and you can program waypoints so they can be used for "surveillance" - at least while battery lasts...
