My old Sony MP3 player is slowly dying - it's lasted for 10 years though, been soaking wet, dropped and generally badly mistreated but has kept going. A couple of buttons have stopped working recently though and the USB plug only works about half the time.

Can anyone recommend an equally durable MP3 player to last me the next 10 years? Needs to be at least 8GB, preferably water-resistant and strong enough to be dropped often.

The cheaper iPod, the metal ones with no screen, are very robust.

just buy a cheap android phone and use that, bought my son a LG L3 for $60 to replace his ipod, he loves it. It lasts for days in between charges and it's easy to add songs and operate.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I have got the iPod touch, nano and shuffle. The touch sits in the glove box of my car as my music on the drive. The nano is mostly my daily driver. The shuffle has retired.

I recently bought a moto g and have been using that as my running mp3 player. Paired with a bluetooth set of headphones, turn on Runtastic, its awesome - GPS tracking etc.

So I believe it depends on your usage and what you need it for. For something like running etc, I would get a cheap android. If you want something that is in your pocket all the time, an iPod nano might do you well as well.

I also approve of the nano, my previous nano was a 2G nano...I dropped it once while riding my bike and witnessed a car behind me drive over it, still worked perfect....it last years until the hold switch gave out. I have the latest nano and love it. I listen to it whenever I'm out travelling, all day long at work, when studying at home and all night long in bed (I have issues and need music/white noise tracks all night long to sleep). Picked up some tiny silicon skin for it off TM and it is still going strong after a good few years of endless use and abuse. Not the cheapest but imo best sound/durability/battery life combo for the money.

I didn't even think about using a cheap phone - that's a great idea. There's been a few times on trail runs or at sunset that I've wished I had a camera too.
