Hi All.
Hoping you can help me out. Im looking to buy a simple ereader that has no internet connection. I currently read my books on my ipad mini, but I have found this to be a problem. When im lying in bed I either receive email or get distracted browsing the web. I really want a basic, backlit ereader without email or internet capabilities

Well any kindle e-reader would work fine as to access the internet you have to be quite deliberate to access the internet.

Or you could save yourself the money and just turn off the WiFi on your iPad...

You won't save your eyes though, reading from a back lit ipad is way tougher on eye strain than an e-ink e-reader.

I have the recently released Kobo HD. It is a high resolution reader with an excellent backlight. Costs around $200

Kindle Paperwhite is a great e-reader. The backlight is awesome. While I think they do have internet access via a really super slow browser you have to try really hard to access it, and it's really slow. It doesn't do email, except really slow web mail via the really slow browser. They effectively have no useful internet, but without a network connection getting books into them would be annoying. With a network connection it pulls books down, or you can send books to it via email or the 'send to kind' app.

DSE sells them for reasonable prices.

Further to what Timmmay says above, internet access on Kindle e-readers may be very easily turned off in the settings menu. My wife only turns it on when she has purchased a book and is waiting for it to arrive. The rest of the time she leaves it turned off to save on battery consumption.

Either a Kindle or a Kobo will do you just fine. Both the Kindle Paperwhite or the Kobo Glo are decent quality and reasonably priced readers that will meet your requirement.

I have one of the old keyboard Kindles, and I still use it when I travel as it has a good sturdy cover and is also of less concern to me if it gets knocked about a bit.

I also have a Kobo Aura, which is nicer but pricier. If you have the Budget I recommend one of those (or the H2O that has replaced it). The bigger screen may not seem like much, but it does make a big difference in practice.

@michaelmurphy - yes a reader does cost a bit up front. But ebooks are typically much cheaper than regular books. Bestsellers are typically a few dollars cheaper. If you aren't after the latest bestsellers I have acquired classics from Amazon for $0.80-$4.50, and others for free (legally from Project Gutenberg). Plus, there is a bigger range of ebooks available than there is for dead tree versions, esp sourced locally.

And in addition, just like physical books, you can borrow e-books from libraries for no cost. If this is something the OP may be keen on then Kindles are not the greatest option, given libraries here use DRM-protected EPUB files which aren't compatible with Kindles. It's the reason why, if I was to replace my Kindle, I'd buy one that was EPUB-compatible.

Of course, there's the option of removing the DRM and converting the format via Calibre, but that's just one more hassle to go through (which I don't bother to do with my Kindle); I bought my son a Kobo Touch (not the latest or greatest, including no back-lighting, but fine for an eight year old who's liable to break or lose it!) for its compatibility with library books. It's nothing as straight-forward as purchasing from the Kobo/Kindle book store as it requires a computer and transferring the books via Adobe Digital Editions, but sill opens up a much wider book selection for no cost.
