I am successfully emailing ebooks directly from Calibre via Xtra with these settings - Hostname send.xtra.co.nz, Port 465, User Name (my full email address), and SSL encryption.

Am unable to get it working for a friend who is on gmail using settings - Hostname smtp.gmail.com, Port 465 and SSL encryption (as per instructions on gmail).

But it's not working so am I missing something?  Am also going to set up for another friend on wnation using smtp.gmail.com, Port 465, SSL encryption (as per wnation instructions).

Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

That's exactly what I have used, so can't understand why it's not working.  Is there something in their gmail setup which could be the problem??

Other forums have suggested using TSL authentication and Port 587.  Could this work?

That's another port configuration that may work.

Do you get any error?  like user/password incorrect or anything useful like that?

I got a whole list of errors but I do remember seeing password & user name incorrect.  My friend assured me they were correct though.  She lives in the whops so am not able to check again myself without going there again.

So you're setting up  calibre instance at her house to send out?  Rather than using a instance of yours to send to her right?

Correct.  Setting her up to send books.  I can send them to her from my calibre no problem.

May be completely unrelated but I tried emailing a book to my Kindle from Calibre last night (using gmail, with settings that have worked a thousand times before) with no success. Perhaps something has changed at gmail's end?

Is she using the latest version of Calibre?

If it says "user/password incorrect" then it is hitting an email server, hopefully the correct email server, it's not a firewall/connectivity issue. Most likely explanation is the user or password is incorrect and your friend is wrong.

I set myself up a test gmail account and it's working for me on either Port 465/SSL or Port 587/TSL.  My friend has internet access via a nearby rural school.  Could this be the problem?

Also, is anyone using the other Calibre options of emailing via GMX or Hotmail??

? Change permission on Gmail account.

My raspberry pi security camera email pictures to my Gmail account in response to motion but I had to change security permission on Gmail account for Gmail to accept the emails.

Using settings in original post I had to tick option in Gmail settings to use less strong protection.

Partial success!  My friend's gmail password was indeed wrong!  She managed to change it (which involved driving 10 km to town to get her mobile to work!!) so we now know the user name and password are correct (finally).

We tried to email another book from Calibre but google emailed her back to advise they were preventing unauthorised access to her account and the email wasn't delivered.  (So we know we have the correct user name and password at least).

Please please can someone talk me through exactly how to authorise Calibre in gmail settings. I have tried and can't figure out how to do it (simple steps, please!).

As an aside, I have recently set up another friend on wnation (through gmail) and it worked no problem.
