I see 1 Day has one for $30. Are these progressing? I saw one a workmate imported, it was 2/10 visual quality. Are they the sharpness equivalent of good SD yet, maybe even almost HD-like? The ad indicates there are many many apps available, so might be fun to use. Especiallyfor overseas tourist locations

A $30 VR headset will be a "insert your phone in the back of the case and run a 3D app"

It won't be anything more than that.

You'll get more value out of a $30 box of beers than one of these (that's speaking from experience cool )

I can relate to that!

Yes, I wouldn't expect too much, but if they are improving, and there are now cheap, ok, good ones in the various price ranges it might be fun.

If its just a blurry grainy issue still, then still just a novelty?

Quality depends on your phone and the app.  They are certainly getting better...

... but you hit the nail on the head - "novelty" item.

It will wear off after half an hour and you'll have yet another piece of plastic sitting in your cupboard.

Having a high end smartphone is a good start, otherwise its rubbish.

Latency and accuracy from the accelerometer, quality of the screen play a big big big part.

Google cardboard with my iPhone 6plus was excellent, nearly Occulus DK1 visual quality, so a proper headset with half decent lenses should be good!
