I bought some sandisk cruser fit drives (16gb) to use in my cars stereo (fiat blue and me system)...but they are flaky and slow and don't play nicely with the system....my "standard" size verbatim stick works flawlessly.
The problem is that the usb port is in the center console and the stick is easily knocked...

Is there a good quality fast low profile/nano usb stick out there in 16 or 32gb?

Generally anything even a little bit quick will have a USB 3 controller on it now, so if you are looking at USB2 sticks you only get bottom end trash ones.

I got some little readers and use some of my smaller microsd cards in it as flash drives, since I have not found any cheap tiny drives to work properly. Stick out about as much as a logitech nano reciever since the card actually sits in the tounge of the USB connector. Can leave in the lappy when it goes in and out of the bag without a worry.

Tbh I'm not sure if usb3 would be an issue or not...might give one of those micro SD adaptors a go...as long as they are LOW profile. The port is in the bottom of the center console pocket and the stick stands straight up.... (facepalm)

The reader I use is just USB 2, but I can get decentish write speeds to it with a good card in it.

You could always pop the card out and into a decent reader for loading the card up anyway.

Was similar to this one. http://www.dx.com/p/pny-usb-2-0-micro-sd-tf-card-reader-black-max-128gb-361716

Last cheap USB stick I bought was a warehouse own brand one, and it was flatlining around 4MB/s write speeds on a good day, but was frequently slower than internet which is my benchmark for when a USB stick is terrible.

I just picked up two of those Sandisk Cruzer items off AliExpress in 16GB.  They seem to play nicely with my car stereos, though they are relatively generic lower end Pioneer or Sony head units.

Same reason as OP.  Wanted something that didn't stick out from the head unit.

Maybe faulty product?

All three crusers are the same. I don't really care too much about write speeds but the read speed needs to be up there

I've got one of these which I quite like. Very low profile, reasonably fast (although not staggeringly so), full metal body, and nothing angled or sharp sticks out for anything to catch on.

Well I've come to the conclusion that those sandisk cruser fit drives are shyte. Even in my work vans usb port and not even being used the things heat up alarmingly hot...and even hotter when being used. These things bleed voltage like crazy..I would hate to think what long term damage they would do to the one and only non replaceable usb port in your car stereo.

Can you use a short USB lead to a more secure location for the USB drive?

No the whole point of the nano usb was go make the tray actually use able without something sticking up in the middle of it...car is brand new so don't want to mess with it...if was older I'd hack the wiring loom and move the port in a heartbeat.
