I don't have any plans on what do with them yet - just planning to play around. Any recommendations on where I can buy them relatively cheaply?

Just check which type, some are an older protocol or something and only work with some phones. If they say note 4 on them then they should be all good.

Store URLs. Have the tags do things like turn wifi and Bluetooth on/off so when you put it in the car holder BT on and wifi off etc.

Jumping in on this thread, what is the best app to write to these tags (Android)?  Will just be simple things like changing state on BT, WiFi etc

If you want to have a play with them, easiest is to use a hotel key card.
Only some key cards work, had a stack of them, and found only 5 that works.
Otherwise use AtHop card, for $5 you can have a programmable card.

Not all NFC is the same, apparently some have lower memory or something.
I got my sister to drop by store near her place in London to pick up a selection pack of them.
Wrist band, stickers, key tag, micro tag etc pack of 50
Unfortunately their shipping charges make them not worth it to ship to NZ.

I use Trigger, available on Play Store, with the larger capacity tags, can program 2 function per tag

To answer my own question, I'm currently playing with NFC ReTag FREE https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.widgapp.NFC_ReTAG_FREE&hl=en - stores a tag database locally on the device, so you can use any NFC tag to trigger any action on your device.

NFC tags look like a good thing to play with... The Type 1 tags can store 96 bytes and can be encrypted..

Ah... My Moto G3 phone does not have NFC...

So looking at the ACR122U-A9 reader writer from Aliexpress at US$28.39 looks pretty good...

Awaiting some NFC tags from AliX, and been playing with the app I mentioned above, which detects tags that can trigger a device-specific function.

While in McDs today, the app detected a new tag. Moving my phone around the table showed that there were multiple tags attached to the underside of the table. Does anyone know what purpose these serve?

Possibly for the locators that you can get when you choose to use the create your own, that would let them ID the table so they know where to bring the food?

Bought myself a ACR122U NFC reader from Aliexpress to play with.

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/1pcs-USB-ACR122U-NFC-RFID-Smart-Card-Reader-Writer-For-all-4-types-of-NFC-ISO/32613531011.html

and some extra Tags yet to arrive:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/10pcs-RFID-Tag-13-56MHz-S50-NFC-Tags-Key-Tags-Keyfobs-Token-Re-writable-NFC-Tag/32641083755.html

After much messing around I found that Windows 10 automatically recognises the reader and the NFC card.

To write/read to the card I got hold of:

GoToTags.WindowsApp-v3.3.6.0.msi

Found here:

https://gototags.com/products/windows-app/

Hope that helps other beginners.

Cheers
