check out the archos range. when you're getting into the 80gb+ range you should be looking at pmp players not just mp3 players. i would definately steer clear of ipods. though that is just my personal opinion from hands-on use i'm sure some fanboy will flame me for it.

From what I've seen of Archos, they're drastically overpriced. I'm thinking about waiting for the 16gb ms pro duo to come out next week and just use my phone or psp, but 16gb isn't really enough space.

yea archos are pricey but thats coz they have a very good build quality and aren't as "mainstream" as people like apple who have to price their products competetively. i've been using a 8gb sdhc card in my n95 and its been fantastic, i sold my old sansa 8gb mp3 player the other day. can't wait for the 16gb cards, just hope the n95 classic can handle with its ram!

iPods are OK.... When they have all the horrible apple software and iTunes dependencies REMOVED!

I run two devices:

*
Archos AV700 (40GB) which is currently in bits getting a 120GB hard drive upgrade. This thing is a PVR so is utterly massive as an mp3 player but still much nicer than a hideous whirring media centre PC.

*
An iPod video running the great Rockbox firmware, allows me to just load my mp3's into album directories on the hard drive and take music back off like it should be.

Problem is both are long out of production.

Yeah, if Rockbox worked for iPod Classic I probably would be leaning towards that. I was looking for a high-capacity one so I could also use it as a storage device, but I guess I'll probably end up buying a 16gb stick and a 160gb 2.5 external HD. If memory serves, this will probably cost around 300+about 250= $550 , which is around the price of a 160gb ipod.

trademe ftw!

yo paradoxsm did u ever get a hands-on look at the archos PMA? (portable media assistant). it had such potential but alas its wireless got horrible reviews which is the reason why i never ordered mine. i hope they make a newer, more advanced version. that would be uber cool.
