If you have a spare/old Android device you can put it to good use: try CleverLoop Smokey.

The folks from CleverLoop launched this free app that will monitor sounds and in case of a smoke alarm being activated it will notify you on your main smartphone.

Hmmm. I see you brought in the tinfoil hat to the discussion. A bit different from Amazon Echo and I actually met one of the CleverLoop guys (he's Wellington-based) and one of their developers so I think this may bring the conspiracy theories...

The app perfoms analysis locally. It looks for common alarm signatures and creates an alert if any are detected. Good idea I thought.

@freitasm, any chance you can tempt Mr CleverLoop onto Geekzone for product suggestions? I really want one, but am being held back by lack of an in-house siren and keypad/manual override module.

Mr CleverLoop wants to offer a discount to Geekzone users - I was going to send via email but didn't want to be the only thing in the email. If you think it's worth it I will create a message and send to everyone (who is accepting our emails/newsletter obviously).

Since I'm home nearly all the time it wouldn't do me much good, but I applaud the idea.

Yeah, I'm good with a discount! Thanks Mr Cleverloop!

Completely unrelated of course, but how do I check if I am signed up for a newsletter? I get geekzone forum update emails pretty much constantly (and I'm happy about that), but can't recall ever reading a newsletter...

Indeed, look at all the permissions it requires, plus it's a free app, so assume you're the product right? Yes i see they say hidden in a clicky that everything is done locally...

Device & app history

  • read sensitive log data

Location

  • precise location (GPS and network-based)
  • approximate location (network-based)

Phone

  • read phone status and identity

Photos / Media / Files

  • read the contents of your USB storage
  • access USB storage filesystem
  • modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

Storage

  • read the contents of your USB storage
  • modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

Microphone

  • record audio

Wi-Fi connection information

  • view Wi-Fi connections

Device ID & call information

  • read phone status and identity

Other

  • change your audio settings
  • control vibration
  • control flashlight
  • full network access
  • connect and disconnect from Wi-Fi
  • view network connections
  • prevent device from sleeping
  • run at startup

Surely it only needs microphone and the following to send alerts..

  • full network access
  • connect and disconnect from Wi-Fi
  • view network connections
  • prevent device from sleeping
  • run at startup

I have to admit I get nervous of companies that hide their info. The about us link just goes to more sales blurb, the contact us is a mail to link, the help is a mail to link, no phones no physical address and the FB page is the same.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Hi all

'Mr. CleverLoop' here. Happy to take any questions you have about the CleverLoop security camera system, or CleverLoop Smokey.

I see there were a few questions about contact details and Smokey app permissions.

If our go to our NZ website, www.cleverloop.co.nz you will see contact phone numbers in NZ. Feel free to give us a call anytime, more than happy to talk.

The app permissions used for Smokey were actually set by default by our app developer to be the same as the full video security camera system. He should have narrowed it down to only those permissions needed by Smokey, which is a lot narrower. Nice pick-up by the Geekzone community, so thanks for that. The next Smokey version update to PlayStore, which will be in the next day or so, will reduce permissions to:

- connect to or disconnect from WLAN networks (full network access, view network connections, view WLAN status)

- run at startup

- control flashlight (control vibration, prevent phone from sleeping)

- change your audio settings

Thanks
