Hi everyone,

After a bit of research I decided an August Smart lock combined with a smart keypad was they way to go with our front door.

So far, so good. They ship to New Zealand (although the warranty isn't covered).

I had no problem fitting the lock and getting it working. It is working like a champ.

During considerations I thought about what would happen if I ended up outside the house without my phone. Luckily the lock can be paired with their smart keypad. No problems so far. I purchased one of those.

Here is the problem. The keypad will not pair with the lock in New Zealand. I get a 403 Access denied popup in the app which has something to do with connections to the August servers in the US. I am still in dialog with them about whether we can get the keypad working.

Although the lock is working great it really needs the keypad to work as I intended. Has anyone outside the US managed to get a keypad working?

Cheers, Matt.

Have you tried connecting it though a vpn? Several have a one week trial if it's only needed at the setup stage, and some can even be run though a hotspot on your phone...

@hairy1 I've tried "Avira Phantom VPN" which has a 1Gb/m cap on the free service before (Apple Store) and that should do the trick for you?

Morning guys. I have tried with both a VPN and US time zone.

I am still in discussions with August on whether we can get this thing going although the discussions are becoming more and more one sided.

The frustrating thing is that they won't tell me if it is just a broken keypad or whether it is because it is outside the US. I get the feeling they don't know. They did send a cryptic message saying that having a VPN would not solve the connection problem.

I really want to find someone else outside the US running one so I can eliminate (or not) the faulty keypad.

Cheers, Matt.

OK. So, I have had further communication from August and we have got to the bottom of the problem.

It appears the keypad I purchased was a store returned item which was already linked to another smart lock. It cannot be unlinked apparently so is unusable.... I am waiting to hear how we go about getting it swapped.

So, the short story is that the keypad will work outside the US if you have a "new" keypad.

Cheers, Matt.

I am still in discussions with them! My latest email says that I have to take it back to Best Buy (where I purchased it from). They have a 15 day return period so that will be interesting. If you hold off until the 18th of Sept I should have a new one in my hands and can say for sure.

Cheers, Matt
