Hi guys,

So I'm looking for gifts for christmas and keen on "connected" theme (must be the geek side!). I saw the Automatic and it looked perfect for my Dad (and me too) but seems to only work in the USA. Alternatives all seem to only work in the USA only also. I understand there are OBD bluetooth devices but keen for a mobile data based one and with things like IFTTT integration and the trip detection (the fact this can connect with the expense management systems is very cool!).

Anyone got any ideas of things that already work here or know when this will come to NZ?

Hey, just found this

https://community.automatic.com/automatic/topics/is_automatic_available_in_other_countries

Sounds like the Lite will work outside of the US (but mostly unsupported) - the Pro will not work, just have to do a manual step to get them to add the VIN by emailing them to setup

EDIT: Alternatively, https://dash.by/

I have been looking at the Automatic hardware for a while (A couple of years at least) and it's still not international so I would assume it won't be for the foreseeable future. I didn't realise that the Lite could function outside of the US but did assume there wouldn't be any reason why it wouldn't. That being said, it loses a lot of the functionality I would want.

I've not seen the Dash app. Looks interesting.

If anyone finds an OBD-II BLE adaptor with a USB port then let me know. I haven't looked very hard, but don't see why I can't piggyback off the OBD-II to charge my phone... The port position is ideal for simple cable routing up onto the dash for a phone mount...

Ninja Edit:
I've always wondered how these systems work with the car's built in BT connection. As in, I don't understand how it can work to have both connected. So running phone calls through the car while connected to the app just won't happen. *shrug*

You can have multiple devices connected to phone with Bluetooth at once - the OBD device will be using a different Bluetooth profile so wouldn't impact voice

Amazon ship the Carista device which Dash supports https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YVHGTBM to NZ for about $66 NZD

There are, from the Chinese sites obd connected gps trackers. But the server side would have to be home built. I had one, but nothing would talk to it at the time, but had the GPS side working with GPS gate
