I finally succumbed when my Paperwhite began misbehaving.

You can actually buy them in Noel Leeming now but only in black. I read somewhere that Amazon has restricted the other colours to the US market only.

It's really very good. Eyewateringly expensive, but very good. Since it is probably my most used personal electronic device, I was prepared to pay the price.

It's better than my gen 2 Paperwhite by some margin. The wifi is quicker (much) and the device responsiveness overall is much better. The screen is superbly crisp and the lighting much more even than older ones. Being able to unsnap the magnetic cover/power storage and read one handed is very nice. The shape looks odd, until you get it in your hand and then you go "Ahhhh - that is why they made it look like that!".

I do wish they could make the background white not grey, like proper paper, but apart from that I much prefer reading on a Kindle than a tablet or computer screen.

Battery life seems to be around 2 weeks, reading a couple of hours a day.

If you enjoy reading, the Oasis is the best experience yet in the Kindle world.

Yeah, I've had mine a long time. I left one in a taxi and the insurance company refused to replace it, so I had to buy another.  FINALLY they bought the buttons back, the single most important factor in digital reading pleasure for me. I still feel they are making it too small and awkward to hold (I have reasonable sized hands, not huge).

I agree, it's hard to imagine better.

MY all time fav kindle reader was this

Obviously inferior screen and a bunch of other things, but for holding and quality of button presses, easily the best. I didn't need the keyboard either, though it was useful.

i looked at it but decided it wasnt worth the extra $ , my paperwhite has the same magnetic cover that turns the kindle on and off and i dont hold my kindle by the side to read i hold it at  the bottom so its easier just to touch the screen than a button.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

wow they are expensive. no good for me though. Would be very awkward holding it with weight of battery dragging it down out of your hand holding it with your left hand.  I hold books in left hand all the time as more comfortable than in right hand

You can just rotate it to make it a left hand device pretty sure.

It rotates and flips the screen. You can also swap button function so that back and forth are allocated to either top or bottom button as you want.
As to weight, it's the lightest of the lot without the cover attached and very comfortable in one hand.

I would have carried on with mine had it not died.

I agree, without the cover it's absolutely the most comfortable for one handed reading (in either hand) of any Kindle so far. For those who aren't aware, the screen flip when you switch hands is automatic as the device has an accelerometer to determine which way you are holding it.

I wouldn't want to not have a cover, but often want to read without the cover on. Unlike the Paperwhite, removing and reattaching the cover is effortless (I was essentially forced to always keep the cover on the Paperwhite because of how difficult removing it was). With the Oasis, the only time I ever read with the cover on is if my partner goes to sleep before me I reattach the cover and open it at right angles with the Oasis to block the light from shining her way.

The only disappointment with my Oasis (apart from the price) is that the screen lighting is slightly bluer along the side where the battery and buttons are. This is barely noticeable when hold it on my right hand, but for some reason I find it a lot more obvious when holding in my left hand (must be to do with my eyes tracking left to right). Also only noticeable in a darkened room with the Kindle lighting level quite low (I have it at about 8). Still far better light consistency than my old gen 1 Paperwhite though, and from what I've read Kindles have always been a little bit the luck of the draw when it comes to the lighting. Also, I am VERY particular with that sort of thing and tend to notice even the slightest defect or inconsistency. I got mine shipped from US to brother in Hong Kong, who then bought it over to NZ, so far too difficult to try for a replacement - which may or may not be any better.
