Hi All

My knowledge is pretty basic when it comes to security cameras.

I want 1 outdoor unit to "keep an eye" out on my dogs when i'm at work - make sure no one steals them basically.

Whats the best set up/unit to get?  I'd like to be able to view and get an alert, on my phone, if a person walks into our yard.  Ideally it'd be great to have 2 way communication with anyone who comes into our yard.

Something that is wireless would be best but i'm aware that being "on" all the time would drain the battery quickly and use a lot of data.  Not sure if motion activated would work as the dogs would be wandering about a bit so would probably trigger the activation unless the sensor can be set to aonly detect above a certain height (i.e. only activate for things over 3ft off the ground).

Is this possible? Or do i need to accept that all my wants can't be met and make the best of what is avaliable on the market?

Thanks

I use multiple ring.com products and am really happy with them..

I use the stickup cam in my backyard, specifically to monitor my dogs, and have it hooked up to a solar panel.

Works perfectly for me, the dogs do not trigger the motion, but anything larger than my dogs (Jack Russells) do.

I have a very basic setup at home for when we go away on extended periods, just use a MS webcam and SightHound with IFTTT so I get emails with images, and a SMS alert. The software is very configurable and able to determine if its a pet etc, monitor just certain parts of the view (ie: a gate) etc. FOr a free solution, its worth a look :)

But does rely on a PC of some sort running

Ring is the best bet for someone that doesn't have time or inclination to deal with network setups, etc. I have the floodlight and doorbell - great products.

Wow that Ring stuff is expensive!  The Arlo camera's are hugely popular in my neighbourhood.

Those retailers stock the Ring doorbell.

What I liked about the security ones is that they can use the same power supply as the existing security lights.

I have the Ring Floodlight and it's incredible. Great light, nice and easy to define scan areas for movement. Really good.

Noel Leemings sells Ring products (Here). I've got the doorbell and find it awesome.

Except, had a damn courier today that didn't listen to my instructions to leave a package and instead called me only to hear the same voice. To his defense though he did deliver it later on.

I have Arlo Pros and I wouldn't buy them again.

Pros:

  • Easy to install/configure.
  • No cables required.
  • Water proof.

Cons:

  • Video quality isn't too great.
  • Mobile App Geo fencing is useless. (This annoys me the most)
  • Expensive.

I wonder if there is an output wire where you can get it to turn on some extra lights at a distance away from the floodlight?
