Still haven’t managed to track down a countdown timer. Paid about $6 for one from Ali Express but can’t get it to work.
What I want is a unit to set say at 20 minutes that turns whatever OFF in that time.
When the power is applied to the unit again it turns off again in the 20 minutes.
Any suggestions?

There ought to be Jaycar kits that can do that if you don't mind some soldering. I don't know offhand of any commercial products but this is a pretty simple timer IC function.

do you need the timer to give the device time to shut off in that 20 mins or after 20mins the power is cut and the unit is off?

I have an analogue timer plug (has a dial like an old rotary phone). You just twist it to 20 minutes or up to 3 hours and it turns off after that time. I used it to charge old nicad batteries for RC cars. Got it from Bunnings (don't see it on the website).

Pretty sure it's made by HPM. Took me ages to track one down so good luck.

If you end up with the right timer but it switches on when you want off, or vice versa, you can use a relay to invert the function.

Ask for more details if needed.

This timer here will do it - it has a countdown mode that should do what you want it to.
